Short answer
Bynder is a cloud digital asset management platform from Amsterdam that fits marketing and brand teams sharing one governed library across regions, agencies and channels. Forrester named Bynder a Leader in its Q1 2026 Wave for DAM systems. The fit holds best for buyers who want an EU-only hosting option and accept partner-built connectors for their PIM.
Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.
What Bynder is
Bynder is a cloud DAM platform that stores, enriches and distributes brand and marketing content, sold as a modular package around a core library. Bynder was founded in 2013 and has its headquarters in Amsterdam. Thomas H. Lee Partners announced a majority investment in December 2022, buying the stake of Insight Partners.
Bynder grew partly through acquisition. In February 2018 Bynder agreed to buy Webdam from Shutterstock for USD 49.1 million.
The Bynder products page lists these offerings around the core DAM:
- Digital Asset Management: the central library for files, metadata and permissions
- AI Search Experience and AI Agents: AI discovery and automation features
- Asset Workflow: review and approval of creative assets
- Content Workflow: creation and approval of editorial content
- Studio: on-brand content production at scale
- CX User Community and CX Omnichannel: content delivery to digital touchpoints
- Analytics and Integrations: usage reporting and the integration marketplace
Where Bynder fits
Bynder fits brand and marketing teams that need one governed asset library for internal teams, regional marketers and agencies. DAMSelection places Bynder in the brand and marketing DAM segment of the vendor directory.
DAMSelection assessment: Bynder fits well under these conditions.
- Marketing owns the DAM budget and most users are marketers, designers and agencies.
- Procurement requires EU-only hosting and named ISO certifications.
- The organisation accepts a partner-built PIM connector, or plans its own integration through the API.
DAMSelection assessment: another segment fits better under these conditions.
| Condition | Segment to consider |
|---|---|
| Packaging artwork, SKU-level media and PIM sync drive the requirement | Product content, packaging and commerce |
| One platform must run campaign planning, content operations and DAM for many brands | Enterprise content platforms |
| Data must stay in one EU country with local support in the buyer's language | European specialists |
For direct comparisons, see Bynder vs Frontify, Brandfolder vs Bynder and the Bynder alternatives shortlist.
How Bynder covers the core DAM jobs
Bynder documents capabilities across all four core DAM jobs, with the strongest documentation on AI search and the thinnest on rights management.
| DAM job | What Bynder documents | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest and renditions | Duplicate finder at upload and in the waiting room | Support articles |
| Metadata and search | Natural Language Search, similarity search, search by image, text-in-image search, speech-to-text in over 100 languages, face recognition | Support articles |
| Workflow and rights | Asset Workflow for approvals and Content Workflow for editorial content | Products page |
| Distribution and sharing | CX Omnichannel, Universal Compact View for connected apps | Support articles, products page |
Bynder Natural Language Search uses image embeddings and works without metadata. Bynder states that this approach can struggle with highly specific searches where metadata performs better. A precise metadata schema still decides findability for SKU codes, campaign names and licence terms.
Bynder AI Agents for enrichment, image editing and governance launched into early access in March 2025. The support documentation still describes the AI Agent Platform as available through the Early Access Program. This verification found no Bynder article on rights expiry or licence tracking, so test rights handling in the demo.
Product content and PIM integration
Bynder connects to PIM systems through partner-built apps and through a connector that Stibo Systems built for STEP. This verification found no PIM connector built by Bynder itself.
| PIM | Connector developers listed |
|---|---|
| Akeneo | Dataggo, Induxx NV, Gournay Consulting |
| Salsify | Gournay Consulting, The 543 Group, Lettuce Commerce, Sitation |
| inriver | CTAC, XSARUS, Ntara, Lettuce Commerce |
| Stibo STEP | Stibo Systems, listed in the Stibo Connectivity Gallery (Fit Map level 4) |
| Syndigo | brix Solutions AG, on its own extensions page |
The Dataggo connector for Akeneo creates asset URLs in the PIM while the binaries stay on the Bynder CDN. Dataggo documents one limitation: a new asset version in Bynder does not refresh the Akeneo thumbnail because of Akeneo caching. The Gournay Consulting apps offer bidirectional metadata sync and adjustable pull frequency.
DAMSelection assessment: a partner connector shifts support, upgrades and pricing to a third party. Ask each partner for its support hours, its version policy and the number of live customers on your PIM edition. The PIM and DAM Fit Map shows connector depth per PIM.
Hosting, security and contract checks
Bynder hosts on Amazon Web Services and offers three hosting options: EU-only, US-only and Global. The EU-only option runs in Frankfurt and keeps customer data inside the European Economic Area.
| Topic | What Bynder documents | Confirm in contract |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting option | EU-only (Frankfurt), US-only, Global | The named option in the order form |
| US regions | Global option stores in N. Virginia and California; US-only option runs in Ohio, with Oregon as failover | The option and its regions in the order form |
| Global option | Files stay in chosen data centres; metadata and settings replicate globally | Where metadata sits for EU users |
| Certifications | SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27018:2019, ISO 22301:2019 | Current certificates and scope |
| AI processing | Not publicly documented per feature | Processing region per AI feature |
Ask Bynder to commit in the contract that customer data does not train AI models, and to name the recovery time and point objectives. The data residency entry and the contract clauses guide list the wording to request.
What to test in a scripted demo
Bynder should demo its documented claims on the buyer's own assets, following the scripted demo method.
- Run Natural Language Search in Dutch, German and English on the same 50 assets and compare the hit rates.
- Find a product code printed on packaging with text-in-image search, then a spoken product name with speech-to-text.
- Link 20 assets to SKUs through the partner connector for your PIM, then upload a new version and check the PIM side.
- Show an EU-only tenant and state where files, metadata, backups and AI processing run.
- Route a campaign asset through Asset Workflow with an external agency reviewer and an approval deadline.
- Show a licensed image with an expiry date and what happens to downloads and connected channels after expiry.
- List which AI features in the demo sit in the quoted package, which need an upgrade, and which run in early access.
Pricing questions to ask
Bynder publishes no prices and builds a custom package per customer, priced on users, storage and usage across the martech stack. AI credits are not mentioned on the pricing page.
Ask these questions before the second demo:
- Price each module in the quote separately: DAM, Bynder AI, Asset Workflow, Content Workflow, Studio and Analytics.
- Define how internal users, agency users and portal viewers are counted.
- State the storage allowance and the price per extra terabyte.
- Confirm whether the AI Search Experience sits in the quote, since the support pages describe it as a contract upgrade.
- Ask the PIM connector partner for its own licence and support price, which sits outside the Bynder contract.
- Cap annual renewal increases in writing.
Worked example: a five-year cost model for Bynder has at least five lines. These are the Bynder subscription, the AI upgrade, extra storage, the partner connector licence and implementation services. Enter each line in the TCO calculator to compare quotes on equal terms.
