Akeneo DAM integration: which DAM platforms connect best

Short answer

Akeneo DAM integration connects a DAM to Akeneo PIM so approved images, videos and documents become linked assets on the right product records. DAMSelection rates each DAM on four depth levels: 4 native connector, 3 partner or marketplace connector, 2 documented API pattern and 1 custom build only. Fact: in October 2026 DAMSelection found sourced Akeneo connectors for 12 of 30 DAM vendors.

Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.

What an Akeneo DAM integration does

An Akeneo DAM integration makes the DAM the source of approved files and makes Akeneo the place where those files attach to products and leave for channels.

The DAM keeps masters, versions, rights and creative workflow. Akeneo keeps product attributes, families, completeness and channel exports. The integration moves the asset reference, selected metadata and the asset-to-product link between the two. The DAM vs PIM guide sets out which system owns which data.

DAMSelection assessment: buyers who run Akeneo and a DAM select both against one shared data model. The asset family design in Akeneo and the metadata schema in the DAM must match before the first demo. A mismatch in either system breaks every connector on the market.

How Akeneo models assets and media

Akeneo models product media in the Asset Manager, where assets belong to asset families and products hold them through a product attribute.

Fact, from Cloudinary's Akeneo setup documentation: linking a DAM file to Akeneo needs four values. Those values are the asset family, the asset attribute that receives the media link, the product attribute that holds the media, and the product SKU. Cloudinary gives "atmosphere" as an example family and "link_atmosphere" as an example media link attribute.

Akeneo elementRole in a DAM integrationSource
Asset familyGroups assets of one type, such as packshots or atmosphere imagesCloudinary Akeneo documentation
Media link attributeStores the DAM URL so the file stays in the DAMCloudinary Akeneo documentation
Product asset attributeAttaches assets to a product or product modelCloudinary Akeneo documentation
Product Link RulesLink assets to products automatically from the asset code or a metadata fieldCloudinary MediaFlows and Dataggo App Store listing

Fact: Cloudinary's MediaFlows guide builds the Akeneo asset code from the SKU, a double underscore and the Cloudinary asset ID. The code may contain only letters, numbers and underscores. Akeneo Product Link Rules can then read the SKU from that code and link the asset to the product.

Fact: Akeneo also sells its own product DAM, Akeneo Product DAM, as part of Akeneo Product Cloud. Akeneo describes it as a native part of Product Cloud with AI keyword tagging and delivery through a global CDN. Buyers who already own an enterprise DAM still need the connector routes in the depth table.

Integration patterns and the one Akeneo favours

Akeneo's asset model favours a pattern where the DAM pushes asset records into the Asset Manager and Akeneo stores the DAM reference in a media link attribute.

PatternHow it worksFit with Akeneo
DAM pushesThe DAM creates or updates Akeneo assets through the Akeneo API when a file is approvedStrong: every connector DAMSelection sourced works this way
PIM references by IDAkeneo stores a DAM ID or URL, and channels fetch the file from the DAMStrong: media link attributes hold the reference
Shared delivery layerBoth systems point to one image CDN that renders channel variantsGood when the DAM has its own delivery URLs

DAMSelection assessment: the push pattern with a media link fits Akeneo best for three reasons. First, the DAM knows when a file is approved, so it triggers the update. Second, a media link avoids storing a second copy of every master in Akeneo. Third, Product Link Rules let naming conventions do the linking at scale.

Fact: the Canto connector by The P.I.M. Company stores only links in Akeneo, so assets stay in Canto, and it generates thumbnails for display. Fact: Cloudinary states that its image processing features apply to linked assets, which places delivery in the DAM. Both are examples of the reference pattern with delivery from the DAM side.

What the integration must keep in sync

An Akeneo DAM integration must keep five things aligned between the two systems: renditions, metadata, the asset-to-product link, rights expiry and deletions.

Sync itemDirectionWhat good looks like
RenditionsDAM to AkeneoEach channel gets the size and format it needs, generated by the DAM
MetadataBothProduct data enriches DAM assets, and asset metadata fills Akeneo attributes
Asset-to-product linkBothOne asset links to many products, and a relink updates every record
Rights expiryDAM to AkeneoAn expired licence removes or flags the asset before the next export
DeletionsDAM to AkeneoRemoving an asset in the DAM removes it from products and from the Asset Manager

Fact: several App Store connectors sync metadata in both directions. The Induxx Bynder connector fills Bynder asset metadata from Akeneo product attributes. The Keepeek app syncs metadata both ways and can keep confidential images blurred until a set reveal date.

Rights expiry needs explicit design. The rights management guide explains the licence fields a DAM must hold. The connector must carry the expiry state into Akeneo, or channel exports keep sending an expired image.

How to read the Akeneo depth table

The depth table under this text shows one cell per DAM vendor with sourced evidence, rated from 4 to 1, and leaves every other vendor blank.

A blank cell means DAMSelection found no source in October 2026. It does not mean an integration is impossible. Every DAM with a REST API can reach the Akeneo API through a custom build or an integration platform.

Summary of what DAMSelection found, all facts sourced in the table:

  • Level 4, four vendors. Keepeek publishes its own app on the Akeneo App Store. Cloudinary documents Akeneo sync flows in its MediaFlows product, after ending support for its legacy Akeneo app on 29 August 2024. Aprimo publishes a free open-source app, and Scaleflex lists its own free Filerobot connector.
  • Level 3, eight vendors. Bynder has partner connectors from Induxx and Dataggo on the App Store, plus a Gournay Consulting app on the Bynder Marketplace. StrikeTru built the Acquia DAM and MediaValet connectors. The P.I.M. Company built the Canto connector, and brix IT Solutions built the CELUM app. Frontify built its integration with partner Activo, and Papirfly and Tenovos list Akeneo connectors without naming the builder.
  • Level 2 and level 1: no cells in this version.

Fact: the Akeneo App Store also lists DAM apps outside the DAMSelection vendor list, such as the Zakeke 3D DAM App by FUTURENEXT for 3D models. The PIM and DAM Fit Map compares the same evidence across all seven PIM platforms. The integrations overview explains the four levels, and vendor profiles show each DAM's wider connector list.

Level 3 connectors carry a support question. The partner maintains the code, so the buyer needs a support contract with the partner as well as the DAM vendor. Check the last update date on each listing: the MediaValet and Acquia DAM listings show August 2023, and the CELUM listing shows February 2024.

What to test in a scripted Akeneo demo

A scripted Akeneo demo tests the full asset loop on the buyer's own products and files. Add these steps to the scripted demo scenarios.

  1. Name the connector in the quote: the vendor, the partner, the version and the App Store listing.
  2. Approve one new packshot in the DAM and show it arrive in the right Akeneo asset family within the agreed time.
  3. Show the asset linked to the correct SKU through a naming convention or Product Link Rules, without manual work.
  4. Link one asset to 20 products, then relink it to a different product model.
  5. Change one product attribute in Akeneo and show the matching DAM metadata update.
  6. Replace the master file in the DAM and show the new version on the Akeneo product.
  7. Expire the licence on one image and show what Akeneo and the next channel export do.
  8. Delete one asset in the DAM and show the result in the Asset Manager and on the product.
  9. Show the error log after a failed sync, and who receives the alert.
  10. Confirm the Akeneo editions supported: Community, Growth, Enterprise on-premise or the SaaS editions.

The DAM integration testing guide turns these steps into acceptance tests for go-live.

Common failure points

Akeneo DAM integrations fail most often at deletions, edition limits, linking rules and connector ownership.

  • Orphaned media. Fact: in Cloudinary's legacy integration, deleting a link updated the Akeneo product but left the media in the Akeneo Media Manager. Test the deletion path for every connector.
  • Edition gaps. Fact: Cloudinary's legacy integration required Akeneo Enterprise Edition. Fact: Keepeek states that its custom asset picker is incompatible with Serenity. Match the connector to the edition the buyer runs.
  • Fragile asset codes. Fact: Akeneo asset codes in the Cloudinary flow allow only letters, numbers and underscores. SKUs with hyphens or dots need a mapping rule.
  • Unowned code. Partner connectors depend on one firm. A listing without a named publisher, as with one older Bynder listing, gives no support route.
  • Discontinued connectors. Fact: Cloudinary ended support for its legacy Akeneo app in August 2024. Ask each vendor for the connector roadmap and a notice period in the contract.

Frequently asked

Does Akeneo have a native DAM connector?

Akeneo sells its own Akeneo Product DAM as part of Akeneo Product Cloud. For external DAMs, the Akeneo App Store lists connectors built by DAM vendors and partners. In October 2026 DAMSelection found four DAM vendors with connectors they build themselves, Keepeek, Cloudinary, Aprimo and Scaleflex, and eight with partner-built connectors or connectors whose builder is not named.

Which DAM integrates best with Akeneo?

The DAM that integrates best with Akeneo is the one whose connector passes the buyer's scripted demo on the buyer's asset families. Level 4 connectors, built by the DAM vendor, carry the lowest support risk. Level 3 partner connectors can work equally well when the partner is active and under contract.

Should assets live in Akeneo or in the DAM?

Masters, versions and rights belong in the DAM, and Akeneo holds the link and the product context. DAMSelection assessment: media link attributes keep one master in the DAM and avoid a second copy in Akeneo. Store a binary copy in Akeneo only when a channel connector cannot read external URLs.

How long does an Akeneo DAM integration take?

DAMSelection rule of thumb: a packaged connector with an agreed asset family design goes live in 4 to 8 weeks, including testing. A custom build on the Akeneo API takes 8 to 16 weeks. Asset family and naming convention design add 2 to 4 weeks when the buyer starts from nothing.

What does an Akeneo DAM connector cost?

App Store listings rarely publish connector prices. The Canto connector by The P.I.M. Company states quote-based pricing. Ask each vendor and partner for the licence, setup and annual maintenance cost of the connector, and add it to the five-year cost model.
