Vendor profile

Cloudinary DAM review: fit, pricing model and integrations

Short answer

Cloudinary is a media platform with two products: Cloudinary Assets, its DAM, and Programmable Media, its developer APIs for image and video processing and delivery. Both share one asset repository. Cloudinary Assets fits commerce and digital teams that deliver product media to websites and apps at scale, on a quote-based Enterprise plan after a 30-day trial.

Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.

What Cloudinary is

Cloudinary is a media management company founded in 2012 by three developers, with its first listed office in San Jose, California. Cloudinary sells two products that buyers should keep apart in evaluation and contract.

ProductWhat it doesHow Cloudinary prices it
Cloudinary AssetsDAM for creative and marketing teams: upload, metadata, search, collections, portals, approvals30-day trial, then quote-based Enterprise
Programmable MediaDeveloper APIs that resize, crop, convert and deliver images and video by URLPublished plans in monthly credits
MediaFlowsLow-code automation flows, including PIM and Shopify syncPlan inclusion not stated in the docs opened

Cloudinary Assets launched as Cloudinary's Digital Asset Management solution in June 2018. In January 2020 Cloudinary described itself as profitable and self-funded. In February 2022 funds managed by Blackstone Growth invested more than $100 million at a $2 billion valuation.

Where Cloudinary fits

Cloudinary fits the DAMSelection segment of product content, packaging and commerce: product imagery, e-commerce delivery and PIM integration. DAMSelection keeps Cloudinary there because its documented strengths sit in delivery URLs, commerce platform connectors and PIM sync flows.

DAMSelection assessment: Cloudinary suits a buyer with these conditions.

  • An e-commerce or digital team that serves product images and video to a headless storefront or app through an image CDN.
  • A retailer on Salesforce Commerce Cloud, SAP Commerce, Adobe Commerce, commercetools or Shopify.
  • A product content team on Akeneo or Stibo STEP that wants a documented sync route.

DAMSelection assessment: another segment fits better when brand guidelines, agency portals and campaign approvals drive the selection, or when data must stay in the EU on a non-Enterprise contract. Compare options on the Cloudinary alternatives page, the Cloudinary vs Scaleflex Filerobot comparison and the retail and e-commerce shortlist.

How Cloudinary covers the core DAM jobs

Cloudinary Assets documents capabilities across all four core DAM jobs, and its distribution job runs through the shared Programmable Media repository.

  • Ingest and renditions: bulk upload and imports from Google Drive, Dropbox, Shutterstock, iStock and URLs. Studio and the Advanced Editor resize, crop and apply effects.
  • Metadata and search: structured metadata, AI-based content analysis that tags images and video, and Advanced Search across tags, metadata, colour, face count and location.
  • AI discovery: Visual Search by reference image for Enterprise accounts with Visual Search, and People Search from August 2026.
  • Workflow and rights: creative approval proofs and the Creative Approval API for multi-stage flows, Roles and Permissions, and a FADEL rights integration labelled beta.
  • Distribution and sharing: shared folders, published collections with an optional date range, portals, and delivery URLs for sites and apps.

Two Assets modules run on third-party services. The Cloudinary sub-processor list names Smint.io for the Portals module and Ziflow for the Creative Review module.

The 5 May 2026 release notes list the Workflow Agent and Moderation Agent as available. The Taxonomy Agent and Search Agent were rolling out, and agent API access was coming soon.

Product content and PIM integration

Cloudinary has three PIM routes at Fit Map level 4 and one at level 3. The PIM and DAM Fit Map records Akeneo, Stibo STEP and Syndigo at level 4 and Bluestone PIM at level 3.

  • Akeneo: Akeneo Sync with MediaFlows sends each asset's URL to the Akeneo Asset Manager, keyed on SKU, and can pull product name, description or category back as structured metadata. Cloudinary builds MediaFlows.
  • Stibo STEP: Stibo Systems built a Cloudinary connector on the STEP Asset Push capability and sells it as an add-on.
  • Syndigo: Syndigo and Cloudinary co-developed the Cloudinary Advanced DAM app, which Syndigo sells and supports.
  • Bluestone PIM: Cloudinary lists Bluestone PIM in its integrations directory as a partner-supported integration.
  • Partner pages: Actindo and Chioro appear among Cloudinary's PIM integrations on partner-built pages.

DAMSelection assessment: the Akeneo route is a configurable flow built from sample PowerFlows. Ask who maintains the flow after go-live and which plan includes MediaFlows. Read the Akeneo integration guide and the Stibo STEP integration guide.

Hosting, security and contract checks

Cloudinary hosts on AWS and Google Cloud and delivers media through Amazon CloudFront, Akamai, Cloudflare and Fastly. The sub-processor list puts AWS storage in the US by default, with EU and APAC storage for Enterprise customers on request. The Trust page confirms that Enterprise customers can choose EEA storage.

The Trust page states a SOC 2 Type II examination by Deloitte covering security, availability, privacy and confidentiality, plus ISO 14001. Cloudinary commits to 99.9% uptime, measured by a third party.

Confirm these points in contract:

  • The contracting entity: Cloudinary Inc., Cloudinary Ltd. or Cloudinary UK Ltd., whichever signs the order form.
  • EEA storage for primary data and backups, written into the order form.
  • An ISO/IEC 27001 certificate, which the Trust page text does not claim.
  • The AI sub-processors and processing region for tagging and agents.
  • Which services the 99.9% uptime commitment covers, including CDN delivery.

The data residency glossary entry defines the terms to use.

What to test in a scripted demo

Cloudinary's demo should prove the DAM workflow and the delivery link on your own assets, with Assets and Programmable Media shown separately. Use the DAM demo script and run these tests.

  1. Upload 300 product images to Assets and show AI tagging and Advanced Search against our metadata schema.
  2. Approve one image in Assets and show the delivery URL serving a crop and format for our storefront.
  3. Run Akeneo Sync with MediaFlows against our Akeneo sandbox for 20 SKUs, then change one image.
  4. Route one campaign asset through a creative approval flow with two reviewers.
  5. Build a portal for an external agency and show which features run on the Smint.io module.
  6. Show the storage region for our account in the console and the EEA option in the order form.
  7. Show the credit or usage report for one month of delivery traffic.

Pricing questions to ask

Cloudinary publishes prices for Programmable Media and none for Assets, so the Assets quote decides the DAM cost. Programmable Media credits pool storage, processing and bandwidth, so delivery traffic drives that cost. Model both in the TCO calculator.

ItemWhat Cloudinary publishesWhat to confirm
Assets30-day trial with 3 users and 25 GB, then custom EnterpriseUsers, storage and modules in the quote
Programmable Media Plus$99 or $89 a month, 225 creditsWhich billing period carries each price
Programmable Media Advanced$249 or $224 a month, 600 creditsOverage price per credit
Credit1,000 processing operations, 1 GB storage or 1 GB image bandwidthVideo bandwidth rate on your plan

Worked example: a storefront that serves 3 TB of images a month uses about 3,000 credits on bandwidth alone at 1 GB per credit. That exceeds the Advanced plan's 600 credits, so ask for an Enterprise delivery quote.
