DAM shortlist for B2B manufacturers: 5 vendors scored on 3 scenarios

Short answer

The DAMSelection shortlist for B2B manufacturers names five DAM candidates: Aprimo, Bynder, Canto, Celum and Pimcore. Four of them hold documented PIM connectors in the PIM and DAM Fit Map, and all four connect to Stibo STEP through a connector Stibo Systems built. Pimcore runs DAM and PIM on one platform. The list fits manufacturers linking technical images to tens of thousands of SKUs.

Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.

Who this shortlist is for

The B2B manufacturers shortlist serves manufacturers whose PIM owns product data and whose DAM must supply images, documents and derivatives for every SKU. Sales run through dealers, distributors and B2B webshops, often in several markets and languages.

The selection team usually includes a PIM owner, an enterprise architect and a product content lead. The manufacturing fit guide covers the wider requirements, and DAM vs PIM explains which system owns what.

DAMSelection assessment: DAM and PIM form one product content supply chain, so select them with one shared data model. Teams choosing both systems at once can follow the combined PIM and DAM selection approach.

What the scenarios demand

The three manufacturing scenarios test PIM linkage at volume, dealer access and technical documentation, which together decide whether product pages and dealer channels stay complete.

ScenarioWhat the vendor must showCriteria it tests
80,000 SKUs with technical images linked from the PIMAsset-to-SKU links at volume, bulk relinking, sync direction and which system owns the linkPIM integration depth; API and extensibility
Dealer portal with product mediaDealers find media by product number, see only their markets and download channel renditionsBrand portal and sharing; distribution and CDN
Documentation and CAD derivatives per marketPDFs and CAD previews per market and language, versioned and linked to the productAsset ingestion and processing; metadata and taxonomy flexibility

Worked example: 80,000 SKUs with four images and two documents each create 480,000 asset links. A connector that resyncs every link nightly behaves differently from one that sends only changes, so ask each vendor for the sync model.

Fit Map evidence for the candidates

The PIM and DAM Fit Map records connector evidence for four of the five candidates, and each of the four has a Stibo-built STEP connector. Level 4 means a native connector built and maintained by the DAM or PIM vendor. Level 3 means a partner or marketplace connector.

VendorAkeneoinriverSalsifyStibo STEPSyndigo
Aprimo4444No evidence
Bynder33343
Canto3No evidenceNo evidence4No evidence
Celum33No evidence4No evidence

Fact: Aprimo holds four level 4 cells, the most of any DAMSelection vendor. Bynder has cells for five of the six PIMs with Fit Map evidence, more than any other DAMSelection vendor. Pimcore has no Fit Map cells because its DAM shares one data layer with its own PIM. No candidate on this list has a Bluestone PIM cell, and the Fit Map records no DAM connector for Syncforce. Check your own PIM in the PIM and DAM Fit Map.

Why each candidate is on the list

Each candidate brings documented evidence for at least one scenario, from PIM connector depth to product-level asset models. Each subsection adds what to test.

Aprimo

Fact: Stibo Systems developed the Aprimo connector for STEP. Aprimo built and supports its Salsify connector and publishes an open-source inriver connector on GitHub. Aprimo also publishes a free, open-source Akeneo connector, last updated in September 2024, with no support terms stated.

The Aprimo REST API uses OAuth 2.0, supports segmented uploads for files over 20 MB and documents a per-environment rate limit with a burst buffer.

What to test: bulk-link 1,000 SKUs through the API within the documented rate limit. Ask who supports the open-source connectors in production.

Bynder

Fact: Stibo Systems developed the Bynder connector for STEP. Partners build the Akeneo, inriver and Salsify connectors, including Induxx, Dataggo, Ntara, Ctac, Gournay Consulting and The 543 Group. DAMSelection found no Bynder-built PIM connector. Forrester named Bynder a Leader in its Q1 2026 DAM Wave.

What to test: name the partner who maintains the connector for your PIM. Put that partner's support terms into the contract.

Canto

Fact: Stibo Systems developed the Canto connector, which exchanges STEP XML in both directions. The Akeneo connector comes from partner The P.I.M. Company, is labelled Partner Supported and is priced on quote.

Canto DAM for Products, launched in March 2026, links images to SKUs and attributes and syncs assets and metadata to Shopify and Amazon. DAMSelection places Canto in the brand and marketing DAM segment.

What to test: link technical images to SKUs in DAM for Products. Show which system owns the link when the PIM holds it too.

Celum

Fact: Stibo Systems developed the CELUM asset picker connector for STEP. Brix IT Solutions built the Akeneo connector and Avyre the inriver connector. The CELUM Marketplace lists six PIM connectors, including Pimcore, novomind iPIM and xmedia.

Product Content Studio links assets to product objects, tracks required content per product type and delivers through the CELUM CDN. CELUM hosts on Microsoft Azure in Amsterdam by default and states ISO/IEC 27001:2022.

What to test: configure Product Content Studio for one product family and show completion status for missing technical images.

Pimcore

Fact: Pimcore manages assets next to PIM and MDM data objects on one platform. An image updated once changes on the product record and the export feed. Pimcore generates image, video and document variants on the fly, with AVIF, WebP, TIFF and nine other output formats allowed by default.

Watch-out: the Portal Engine for external asset portals is Enterprise only. Assets are publicly accessible by URL by default until access is restricted. Pimcore uses the Pimcore Open Core License, with the Community edition free under EUR/USD 5 million annual revenue.

What to test: build the dealer portal in Portal Engine and price the Enterprise edition. Show the access restriction set-up for unreleased products.

CAD and documentation evidence

None of the five candidates documents CAD file support in the sources DAMSelection verified, so the third scenario carries the most risk. Ask every vendor to ingest your own CAD files and show the preview, the derivative and the version history.

Fact: Hyland Nuxeo, outside this shortlist, documents support for compound, 3D, CAD and multifile assets, including GLB, FBX and OBJ formats. Manufacturers with CAD at the centre of their content can add the Hyland Nuxeo profile to the long list.

How to run the selection

The manufacturing selection follows the seven-checkpoint Selection Route, with the PIM integration tested as early as Checkpoint 5.

  1. Map the asset-to-product relationship: which asset types attach to which product levels and channels.
  2. Define the shared data model and decide which system owns each link.
  3. Send the three scenarios with your own SKUs and assets, following the scripted demo method.
  4. Ask the PIM vendor and the connector builder to join the integration demo.
  5. Score with the public scoring model and plan integration testing into the contract.

DAMSelection assessment: a connector that works on 50 demo products can fail at 80,000 SKUs, so test at volume.

Frequently asked

What is the best DAM for a manufacturer?

DAMSelection names five candidates for B2B manufacturers: Aprimo, Bynder, Canto, Celum and Pimcore. Four hold documented PIM connectors in the Fit Map, and Pimcore combines DAM and PIM on one platform. The best fit depends on your PIM, your SKU volume and your dealer channels.

Which DAM connects to Stibo STEP?

Aprimo, Bynder, Canto and Celum each have a Stibo STEP connector developed by Stibo Systems, listed in the Stibo Connectivity Gallery. That gives all four a level 4 Fit Map cell for Stibo STEP. Test sync direction and volume, because connector scopes differ.

Which DAM connects to Akeneo?

Bynder, Canto and Celum have partner-built connectors on the Akeneo App Store, each at Fit Map level 3. Aprimo publishes a free, open-source Akeneo connector with no stated support terms. Pimcore needs no connector to its own PIM.

Do I need a DAM if my PIM already stores images?

DAMSelection assessment: a PIM can hold product shots, and a DAM adds renditions, rights, versions, portals and non-product assets. Manufacturers with dealer portals, CAD derivatives or many markets usually need both systems on one shared data model.

Is Pimcore open source?

Pimcore uses the Pimcore Open Core License since Platform Version 2025.1, which classes the public code as source-available. The Community edition is free for organisations under EUR/USD 5 million annual revenue, and larger organisations need a paid licence.
