DAM shortlist for CPG packaging artwork: 5 vendors scored on 3 scenarios

Short answer

The DAMSelection shortlist for CPG packaging artwork names 5 DAM candidates: Aprimo, Bynder, Celum, Esko MediaBeacon and Salsify. Each earns its place through documented evidence such as PIM connector depth, packaging tooling or EU hosting. Scores publish only after each vendor runs the same 3 scripted scenarios on buyer assets, so the order today is alphabetical and carries no ranking.

Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.

Who this shortlist is for

The CPG packaging shortlist serves consumer goods brands whose packaging artwork, product imagery and retailer content must stay in step across markets. Typical buyers are an artwork manager, a regulatory affairs lead and a PIM owner in one selection team.

The list fits three situations:

  • Packaging artwork goes through a regulatory or legal review before print, and the audit trail has to survive an inspection.
  • One product exists in many market versions, with different languages, claims and legal text per country.
  • Retailers and marketplaces expect product images and data that match the pack on the shelf.

DAMSelection assessment: a team that only stores final pack shots for marketing fits the mid-market marketing teams shortlist better. A team whose main pain is marketplace image delivery fits the retail and e-commerce shortlist better.

What the CPG packaging scenario demands

The CPG packaging scenario demands version control with an approval audit trail, a reliable link between artwork and product identifiers, and a clean route from approved asset to PIM and retailer. The three DAMSelection scenarios for this list translate into the requirements in the table.

DAMSelection scenarioWhat the DAM must doEvidence to ask for
Packaging artwork approval with regulatory reviewVersion each artwork file, route it through legal and regulatory sign-off, keep a full audit trailLive approval run on a real dieline with two reviewers and one rejection
Artwork versions per marketHold one master and its market variants, with language, claims and market as metadataSearch that returns every variant for one product and one market within three filters
Retailer content syndicationSend approved images and metadata to the PIM, and on to retailers, with expiry handlingConnector demo that updates a product record after an asset approval

DAMSelection assessment: the metadata model decides success in this scenario. Design the fields for market, language, regulatory status and product identifier before the first demo. The CPG industry fit page and the PPWR and Digital Product Passport guide list the packaging data that crosses DAM and PIM.

Why each candidate is on the list

Each of the 5 candidates sits on the list because its facts file documents a packaging, product content or PIM integration capability.

Aprimo

Aprimo is on the list for the deepest documented PIM connector set among the five. The DAMSelection Fit Map rates Aprimo at level 4 for Akeneo, Salsify, inRiver and Stibo STEP: Aprimo builds and supports the Salsify connector, publishes the Akeneo and inRiver connectors as open source, and Stibo Systems built the STEP connector. Forrester named Aprimo a Leader in The Forrester Wave: Digital Asset Management Systems, Q1 2026.

Aprimo lists a Compliance agent in its AI Agents release of May 2025. Aprimo runs as SaaS on Microsoft Azure, and its trust centre names no hosting regions or data residency options.

What to test: run the regulatory approval scenario with the Compliance agent switched on, and ask Aprimo which EU region holds your data. Price the Salsify or STEP connector separately, because Aprimo prices marketplace connectors after scoping.

Bynder

Bynder is on the list for Forrester Leader status and an EU-only hosting option. Bynder offers EU-only hosting in Frankfurt with no customer data outside the European Economic Area, next to US-only and Global options. Bynder holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27018:2019 and ISO 22301:2019.

The Fit Map rates Bynder at level 4 for Stibo STEP, through a connector Stibo Systems built. For Akeneo, Salsify and inRiver, every Bynder connector comes from a partner such as Dataggo, Induxx NV or Gournay Consulting. Bynder announced a Compliance Agent in December 2025 without an availability status.

What to test: the retailer syndication scenario through the exact partner connector you would buy, with the partner present. Ask Bynder for written availability of the Compliance Agent before you score it.

Celum

Celum is on the list for its product content tooling and EU-default hosting. Celum Product Content Studio links assets to product objects, tracks required content per product type and delivers through the Celum CDN. Celum hosts on Microsoft Azure in Amsterdam by default and holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022.

The Celum Marketplace lists six PIM connectors. The Fit Map rates Celum at level 4 for Stibo STEP, through an asset picker Stibo Systems built. Akeneo and inRiver sit at level 3, built by partners brix IT Solutions and Avyre.

What to test: the artwork versions per market scenario inside Product Content Studio, with a required-content check per product type. Ask who maintains the Akeneo or inRiver connector, because the listings name the builder only.

Esko MediaBeacon

Esko MediaBeacon is on the list as the packaging specialist. Esko sells MediaBeacon next to Esko WebCenter, its packaging management platform, and features a Walgreens Boots Alliance case study that uses both. Esko offers MediaBeacon as an Esko-hosted cloud service or on-premise.

The MediaBeacon product page names no PIM connector and describes no AI capabilities. Esko holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 at company level, and the certification page does not name MediaBeacon in scope. The Fit Map holds no MediaBeacon cell yet.

What to test: the regulatory approval scenario across WebCenter and MediaBeacon together, and the PIM handover through the API your PIM would call. Ask Esko to confirm MediaBeacon Cloud sits inside the ISO/IEC 27001:2022 scope.

Salsify

Salsify is on the list as the PIM and PXM platform that stores digital assets next to product records. Salsify Core Edition includes import, export, storage and display of product records and digital assets in one platform. The Salsify Grocery Accelerator adds missing content from product packaging images, capped at 1,000 GTINs per year as an add-on.

Salsify hosts PXM on Amazon Web Services in the USA and documents no EU hosting option for product and asset data. Cinven announced on 22 July 2026 that it will acquire Salsify, subject to regulatory approvals. Salsify Core caps asset storage at 500 GB and asset CDN bandwidth at 500 GB per month.

What to test: the retailer syndication scenario end to end inside Salsify. Run the artwork approval scenario too, because the facts file documents no artwork approval workflow. Model storage growth against the 500 GB cap in the TCO calculator.

How to run the selection

The CPG packaging selection runs best as a scripted demo on your own artwork, scored against the DAMSelection criteria. Follow the seven checkpoints on the selection route, and build the three scenarios into a scripted demo.

  1. Collect 20 to 50 real artwork files: one product in three markets, with two rejected versions.
  2. Write the metadata model for market, language, regulatory status and product identifier.
  3. Send the script and assets to all five vendors two weeks ahead.
  4. Require the PIM connector demo with the connector builder in the room.
  5. Score each scenario on the same sheet, and keep the recordings as evidence.

Scenarios scored

  1. Packaging artwork approval with regulatory review
  2. Artwork versions per market
  3. Retailer content syndication

Frequently asked

What is the best DAM for packaging artwork?

DAMSelection names no single best DAM for packaging artwork until scripted demo evidence exists. Esko MediaBeacon pairs with Esko WebCenter for packaging management. Aprimo, Bynder and Celum have the strongest documented PIM connector evidence in the Fit Map. Salsify suits teams that want assets inside the PIM.

Do I need a PIM next to a DAM for CPG packaging?

Most CPG teams need both, because the PIM owns product attributes and the DAM owns artwork files and renditions. Salsify combines both in one platform. Aprimo, Bynder and Celum connect to PIMs through connectors that the Fit Map rates at level 3 or 4.

Which candidates offer EU data residency?

Bynder offers an EU-only hosting option in Frankfurt, and Celum hosts on Azure in Amsterdam by default. Salsify documents US hosting for PXM. Aprimo and Esko MediaBeacon publish no hosting regions in the sources checked, so ask both in writing.

Why are there no scores on this shortlist yet?

DAMSelection publishes scores only after each vendor runs the same scripted scenarios on buyer assets. Generic vendor demos carry no selection value, so the page shows Scoring pending until that evidence exists.
