DAM for consumer packaged goods: fit criteria and candidate vendors

Short answer

A DAM for consumer packaged goods is a governed library that versions packaging artwork through regulatory approval, links each version to product and market, and supplies retailers and agencies with approved pack images and brand assets. DAMSelection assessment: for a multi-brand CPG company selling in several EU markets, workflow and approvals plus PIM integration depth should carry 32 of 100 scoring points.

Asset types in consumer packaged goods

A CPG DAM holds two asset families with different rules: regulated packaging assets and brand marketing assets.

Packaging assets change whenever a recipe, claim, recycling mark or market changes. Each change creates a new artwork version that must stay linked to the right SKU, market and approval record. Brand marketing assets follow the campaign calendar and move through agencies and retailers.

Regulation that shapes a CPG DAM

CPG DAM requirements are shaped by EU packaging rules, food information rules for online sales and the ban on unsupported environmental claims.

Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40

Fact: the PPWR has been in force since 11 February 2025 and applies from 12 August 2026, according to the European Commission. Article 12 introduces a harmonised label on packaging material composition. The label applies from 12 August 2028 or 24 months after the relevant implementing acts enter into force, whichever is later.

DAMSelection assessment: the label change will touch most packaging artwork in the EU portfolio within a short window. A CPG DAM must find every artwork version carrying an old recycling mark, track the redesign and record approval per market. The PPWR and Digital Product Passport guide covers the full data flow.

Food Information to Consumers Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011

Fact: Article 14(1) covers prepacked foods sold by distance communication. Mandatory food information, except the date of minimum durability or use-by date, must be available before the purchase is concluded. That information must appear on the material supporting the distance sale or be provided through other appropriate means. DAMSelection assessment: e-commerce pack images and panel images must match the current artwork version, so the DAM needs a link between artwork version and published pack shots.

Directive (EU) 2024/825 on environmental claims

Fact: Member States apply the Directive's measures from 27 September 2026. The amended Annex I bans generic environmental claims the trader cannot back with recognised excellent environmental performance. It also bans sustainability labels that are not based on a certification scheme or set up by public authorities. DAMSelection assessment: record the claim, the evidence document and the certificate expiry as metadata on every artwork and campaign asset that carries a claim.

Channels a CPG DAM serves

A CPG DAM serves retailers and agencies first, and the company's own channels second.

  • Retailer and marketplace product pages, fed with pack shots through the PIM or a syndication network.
  • Printers and prepress partners, who need print-ready artwork and keylines.
  • Creative and media agencies, through a brand portal per brand or region.
  • Trade marketing and key account teams, with customer-specific point-of-sale materials.
  • Brand websites, recipe sites and social channels.
  • Internal regulatory and quality teams, who need the approval history.

Fit criteria and weights for CPG

CPG buyers should weight workflow and approvals, PIM integration depth, metadata flexibility and brand portals highest, because artwork control and retailer supply decide CPG DAM value.

The table applies the twelve DAMSelection scoring criteria to a typical multi-brand CPG company selling food or household products in several EU markets. DAMSelection assessment: raise workflow and approvals for food and personal care, and agree all weights before the first demo.

Scenarios to script for a CPG demo

CPG buyers should script three scenarios that test artwork approval, change impact across the portfolio and retailer supply.

Scenario 1: Approve packaging artwork

  1. Upload version 1 of a packaging artwork file linked to one SKU and two markets.
  2. Ask regulatory to annotate two text changes and legal to annotate one claim.
  3. Upload version 2, compare it with version 1 and route it to final approval.
  4. Show the sign-off record with names and dates.

Pass criteria: complete version history, visual comparison, approval recorded per market and artwork linked to product and market.

Scenario 2: Find every artwork affected by a label change

  1. Load 150 artwork files across three brands with recycling mark and claim metadata.
  2. Ask the vendor to find every current artwork carrying a named recycling mark.
  3. Start a change request for the results and show progress per SKU.

Pass criteria: complete results within three filters, superseded versions excluded, and a progress report the packaging lead can export.

Scenario 3: Supply a retailer and an agency

  1. Publish approved pack shots for 50 SKUs to a retailer feed using GTIN-based file names.
  2. Create a brand portal for one agency limited to one brand and approved status.
  3. Expire one campaign image and show it disappear from the portal.

Pass criteria: correct GTIN names and renditions, the agency sees only permitted assets, and expiry is enforced. The Demo Script Generator packages these scenarios for vendors.

Integrations a CPG DAM needs

A CPG DAM needs a firm PIM or syndication link, an artwork workflow link and creative tool connectors.

Pitfalls in CPG DAM selections

CPG DAM selections fail most often when artwork approval sits outside the DAM and the link between artwork and pack shot breaks.

  • Approving artwork by email. The approval record then lives in inboxes, and auditors cannot trace who signed off which version.
  • Separate libraries per brand. Shared keylines, legal texts and recycling marks then exist in several copies.
  • Pack shots without an artwork version link. Retailers keep showing an old pack after the recipe changes.
  • Claims without evidence metadata. The 2024/825 rules ban generic environmental claims without recognised excellent environmental performance.
  • Agency access by shared accounts. Portals need named users and expiry dates.
  • Demoing with campaign images only. Layered artwork and print PDFs test processing far harder.

Frequently asked

What is the best DAM for CPG companies?

The best DAM for a CPG company is the platform that scores highest on artwork versioning, regulatory approval workflows, PIM integration and brand portals in a scripted demo on the company's own artwork. Start with the product content, packaging and commerce segment and test an artwork approval, a portfolio-wide label change and a retailer feed.

When do the PPWR labelling rules apply?

The PPWR applies from 12 August 2026. The harmonised material composition label under Article 12 applies from 12 August 2028 or 24 months after the relevant implementing acts enter into force, whichever is later. CPG companies should tag artwork by recycling mark and pack material now to size the redesign.

Should packaging artwork approval run in the DAM or a separate tool?

Packaging artwork approval can run in the DAM or in a dedicated artwork management tool, provided the approved version and its sign-off record land in the DAM linked to SKU and market. DAMSelection assessment: companies with more than a few hundred artwork changes per year usually need dedicated artwork workflow features.

How does a CPG DAM share images with retailers?

A CPG DAM shares images with retailers through the PIM or a syndication platform, which sends GTIN-based image links in each retailer's format. The DAM holds the masters and renditions. Test the link by changing a pack shot and checking that the retailer feed picks up the new version.

Does a CPG DAM need to track environmental claims?

A CPG DAM should track environmental claims as metadata. From 27 September 2026, Directive (EU) 2024/825 bans generic environmental claims without recognised excellent environmental performance. The Directive also bans sustainability labels not based on a certification scheme or set up by public authorities. Record the claim, evidence document and certificate expiry on every asset that carries one.
