Short answer
The DAMSelection shortlist for media and publishing names 5 European DAM candidates: Celum, Fotoware, Keepeek, Wedia and WoodWing Assets. All five document EU hosting or self-hosting, and the strongest editorial fit depends on the editorial system in use, such as WoodWing Studio or Adobe InDesign. Scores publish only after each vendor runs the same 3 scripted publishing scenarios on the buyer's own archive.
Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.
Who this shortlist is for
The media and publishing shortlist serves news, magazine and book publishers, plus broadcasters and archives that hold large editorial image and video collections. Typical buyers are a picture desk or archive manager, an editorial systems architect and a rights and syndication lead.
The list fits three situations:
- The archive holds hundreds of thousands to millions of images, and editors must find a usable picture under deadline.
- Licensed agency and freelance material carries usage rights, embargoes and syndication terms that change per title.
- The DAM must feed the editorial system, the CMS and print layout without copying files by hand.
DAMSelection assessment: a publisher whose main need is a brand portal for advertisers fits the mid-market marketing teams shortlist better. The media and publishing fit page sets out the wider industry requirements.
What the publishing scenario demands
The publishing scenario demands fast search across a very large archive, rights data that travels with every image, and integration with editorial and layout tools. The three DAMSelection scenarios for this list translate into the requirements in the table.
| DAMSelection scenario | What the DAM must do | Evidence to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Editorial image archive of millions of assets | Ingest and index wire and staff photos at volume, read embedded metadata, return results fast | Live search on a sample of 100,000 of your images, with timings |
| Rights and syndication tracking | Hold licence terms, embargoes and syndication status per asset, and block expired use | Rights expiry on one licensed image, shown in search, download and connected channels |
| Integration with editorial systems | Place and update images in the editorial system, CMS and InDesign layouts | Image placed in a live layout, then replaced from the DAM |
None of the five facts files states a tested archive size or a search speed. Treat archive scale as a demo test with your own images. Embedded IPTC and XMP metadata decides how much of the archive is searchable on day one.
Why each candidate is on the list
Each candidate sits in the DAMSelection European specialists segment and documents at least one editorial integration, metadata standard or hosting option that publishers need. The subsections give the evidence and what to test.
Celum
Celum is on the list for EU-default hosting and a wide CMS connector set. Celum hosts on Microsoft Azure in Amsterdam by default, offers a single-tenant option and holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022. The Celum Marketplace lists CMS connectors for Adobe Experience Manager, Drupal, FirstSpirit, Magnolia, Sitecore, TYPO3 and WordPress.
Celum documents an Autotagger for its SaaS offering and a DeepL Autotranslator for metadata. Celum describes itself as a bootstrapped company with no disclosed investor.
What to test: archive search on your sample with Autotagger output switched on and off. Ask which CMS connector Celum maintains itself for your CMS.
Fotoware
Fotoware is on the list for its photo metadata depth and deployment choice. Fotoware Veloz supports IPTC, XMP and C2PA metadata, preserves Content Credentials on ingest and lets users filter AI-generated or unverified images out of search. Fotoware offers cloud, on-premises and hybrid deployment.
Fotoware Alto runs lifecycle rules that publish or revoke content automatically, which supports the rights scenario. Fotoware renamed its products in 2025: Fotoware DAM became Fotoware Veloz and Picturepark became Fotoware Alto. The Fotoware Trust Center names no ISO/IEC 27001 or SOC 2 certification, and Fotoware Veloz runs in four Azure regions, including EU West and Germany.
What to test: ingest of wire photos with Content Credentials, then the AI-image filter in search. Confirm which product, Veloz or Alto, the proposal covers. The Content Credentials guide explains the provenance checks.
Keepeek
Keepeek is on the list for French private cloud hosting and publishing connectors. Keepeek runs on a French private cloud with redundant architecture and a daily full backup. Keepeek lists connectors for CoreMedia, Adobe Experience Manager, Contentful, Drupal and Chili Publish print templates.
Keepeek sells facial recognition as an add-on to support GDPR consent management. Papirfly Group acquired Keepeek in May 2023. Keepeek names no security certification for its own platform.
What to test: the rights scenario with facial recognition and a model consent record. Ask Keepeek for current security certification evidence and its product plan inside Papirfly Group.
Wedia
Wedia is on the list for EU-only hosting, single-tenant isolation and video distribution connectors. Wedia's privacy policy states that SaaS data stays on AWS and Azure in EU countries with no transfer outside the EU. Wedia states ISO 27001 and TISAX certification and runs each customer on a single-tenant, container-based deployment.
Wedia's directory lists Brightcove, YouTube and Dailymotion for video, plus Drupal, WordPress and Ibexa. Wedia now markets its DAM as Lyvio. Cathay Capital Private Equity took control in 2024, and Wedia left the stock market in November 2024.
What to test: the editorial integration scenario with your CMS and one video platform. Confirm the product name, Wedia or Lyvio, in the contract.
WoodWing Assets
WoodWing Assets is on the list for its native editorial integration. WoodWing Assets integrates natively with WoodWing Studio and Adobe InDesign for editorial and publishing workflows. WoodWing Assets runs in WoodWing Cloud or on the customer's own infrastructure, and WoodWing Group holds ISO/IEC 27001.
WoodWing Assets has carried three names: Elvis DAM, Swivle and WoodWing Assets. The AI innovations page lists AI alt text and AI search without availability status.
What to test: place an image from WoodWing Assets in a live InDesign layout through WoodWing Studio, then replace it. Ask for written availability of the AI features before scoring them.
How to run the selection
The publishing selection runs best as a scripted demo on a real slice of your archive, with the picture desk and the rights lead scoring together. Follow the selection route and build the three scenarios into a scripted demo.
- Export 100,000 images with their embedded metadata, including 50 with known rights limits.
- Write the metadata model for source, credit, licence, embargo and syndication status.
- Send the script and archive sample to all five vendors two weeks ahead.
- Run the editorial integration test in your own editorial system and CMS.
- Score each scenario on one sheet and keep the recordings.
DAMSelection assessment: storage and egress drive five-year cost for a large archive more than licence fees. Model both in the TCO calculator, and size licence risk with the rights exposure estimator.

Frequently asked
What is the best DAM for publishers?
DAMSelection names no single best DAM for publishers until scripted demo evidence exists. DAMSelection assessment: WoodWing Assets fits WoodWing Studio and InDesign workflows, Fotoware fits photo metadata and provenance needs, and Celum, Keepeek and Wedia fit EU hosting and CMS integration needs.
Which publishing DAMs can run on premises?
Fotoware offers on-premises and hybrid deployment, and WoodWing Assets runs on the customer's own infrastructure. Celum, Keepeek and Wedia document SaaS deployment in the facts checked, so ask each about self-hosted options in writing.
Which publishing DAMs keep data in the EU?
Celum hosts on Azure in Amsterdam by default, Keepeek on a French private cloud, and Wedia states EU-only hosting on AWS and Azure. Fotoware Veloz runs in Azure US East, EU West, Germany and Australia East. WoodWing Cloud hosts each customer in one region: Frankfurt, Northern Virginia or Sydney.
Can a DAM read IPTC and C2PA metadata from wire photos?
Fotoware Veloz documents support for IPTC, XMP and C2PA metadata and preserves Content Credentials on ingest. For the other four candidates, the facts files do not document C2PA support, so test ingest of a credentialed image in the demo.
Why do several of these vendors have new names or owners?
Fotoware renamed its products in 2025, Wedia now markets its DAM as Lyvio, and WoodWing Assets carried two earlier names. Keepeek joined Papirfly Group in 2023, and Cathay Capital took control of Wedia in 2024. Check the product name in every contract.
