Vendor profile

Fotoware DAM review: fit, pricing model and integrations

Short answer

Fotoware is a Norwegian DAM vendor, majority-owned by Viking Venture since 2020, that sells two cloud products on Microsoft Azure: Fotoware Veloz, a classic DAM, and Fotoware Alto, an API-first content hub. Fotoware names Scandinavia, the UK and the DACH region as core markets, and keeps an on-premises edition for industries with strict security requirements such as law enforcement and healthcare.

Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.

What Fotoware is

Fotoware is a DAM vendor from Oslo that sells two cloud platforms, an on-premises edition and desktop and workflow add-ons.

Fotoware AltoPicturepark Content PlatformAPI-first content hub for structured content and distribution

Fact: Fotoware AS was founded in 1997, and its first product, FotoStation, launched in 1994. The company grew by acquisition: Xenario in Germany and the UK, Buildpix in Sweden and InfoMAX in Denmark in 2021, then Picturepark in Switzerland in May 2022.

Where Fotoware fits

Fotoware sits in the DAMSelection European specialists segment of the DAM vendor directory, serving buyers who weigh data residency, local support and industry depth. The five DAM segments explain the segment logic.

DAMSelection assessment: Fotoware fits best under these conditions.

  • Photo-heavy libraries where IPTC and XMP metadata must survive every step, as in news, museums and the public sector.
  • Organisations that need an on-premises or hybrid option next to cloud.
  • Buyers in Scandinavia, the UK or the DACH region, Fotoware's named core markets.
  • Teams that want a headless content hub (Alto) and have developers to build integrations.

DAMSelection assessment: another segment fits better when a packaged PIM connector is a must-have, or when the buyer needs a published security certification such as ISO/IEC 27001 before shortlisting. Buyers comparing European specialists can read Fotoware vs WoodWing Assets and the media and publishing shortlist.

Veloz or Alto: which Fotoware product to evaluate

Fotoware Veloz and Fotoware Alto are separate products with different integration sets, so the choice of product comes before the demo.

NeedProduct Fotoware documents for it
Classic library with desktop and Adobe pluginsVeloz, with Fotostation and the Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign plugin
Structured content with schemas per asset typeAlto, with adaptive metadata layers and schema.org support

DAMSelection assessment: ask Fotoware to name the product, the edition and the add-ons in every proposal line, because documentation, plugins and AI actions differ by product.

How Fotoware covers the core DAM jobs

Fotoware documents metadata and provenance handling in Veloz and structured distribution in Alto.

  • Ingest and renditions: Veloz reads Content Credentials on ingest and preserves them through editing and SFTP export.
  • Metadata and search: Veloz supports IPTC, XMP and C2PA metadata, batch edits and tailored taxonomies. Users can filter AI-generated or unverified images out of search.
  • Workflow and rights: Veloz workflows run on metadata triggers, and Flow adds no-code automation. Consent forms attach to visual assets, and usage rights show alongside them.
  • Distribution and sharing: Alto offers CDN caching, microsites, embed codes, a guest portal and lifecycle rules that publish or revoke content automatically.

The content credentials guide explains why C2PA support matters for news and public sector buyers.

AI in Fotoware

Fotoware ships AI tagging, OCR and object detection through Microsoft Azure, with AWS and third-party extensions in Alto.

  • Fact: Veloz and On-premises auto-tagging use Azure Cognitive Services. Fotoware documents it as a billable feature and recommends human review of results.
  • Fact: Alto's tagging action adds Azure keywords, focal point detection and OCR for images under 4 MB.
  • Fact: Alto extensions add AWS Rekognition for faces and logos, DeepL translation and Remove.bg background removal.
  • Fact: Veloz shows visible markers where AI was involved and lets users inspect provenance.

Product content and PIM integration

Fotoware lists no packaged PIM connector, and PIM integration runs through the REST API. Fotoware states that the Alto API can map data structures from PIM and collection management systems. The Alto FAQ adds that setup and maintenance usually require development resources.

DAMSelection assessment: budget an integration project, with an owner for the mapping and for each PIM upgrade. Check the PIM and DAM Fit Map for the current rating per PIM.

Hosting, security and contract checks

Fotoware runs Veloz, Alto and Flow on Microsoft Azure and keeps customer data in the region the customer selects. Fotoware Veloz runs in four Azure regions: US East, EU West, Germany and Australia East. Fotoware states that Veloz data is not moved outside these regions, and customers bound by German law can keep data in Germany.

Confirm these points in the contract, using the security review guide:

  1. The named Azure region for primary data and backups, and the Alto region, which Fotoware does not publish.
  2. Information security certifications, since the Fotoware Trust Center names none and the about page lists ISO 9001.
  3. Sub-processors for AI tagging, including Azure and AWS services.
  4. Backup frequency, retention periods and recovery points.
  5. Support terms for the on-premises edition if you choose it.

What to test in a scripted demo

A scripted Fotoware demo should test the chosen product on your metadata and your integrations. Use the scripted demo method.

  1. Ingest 100 of your images with IPTC and C2PA data, edit them, export by SFTP and show the metadata intact.
  2. Filter AI-generated images out of a search and show the AI markers.
  3. Run auto-tagging on 200 images and show the review step before tags go live.
  4. Build one metadata-triggered workflow in Flow without code.
  5. In Alto, publish a collection through the CDN and revoke it with a lifecycle rule.
  6. Show the API calls your PIM would use to read approved images.

Pricing questions to ask

Fotoware publishes no prices and builds a modular quote from workflows, users, integrations and scale. Model five-year cost in the TCO calculator.

  1. Which product and edition the quote covers: Veloz, Alto or On-premises.
  2. How auto-tagging is billed, since Fotoware documents it as billable.
  3. The price of Fotostation seats and Flow as add-ons.
  4. Which Alto connectors and extensions carry separate fees.
  5. Storage and CDN volumes included, and the price above them.
