Comparison

Fotoware vs WoodWing Assets: which DAM fits which team

Short answer

Fotoware and WoodWing Assets are both European specialist DAM platforms that run in the cloud or on the customer's own infrastructure. Fotoware fits photo-heavy teams that need C2PA Content Credentials and a choice of two products, Veloz and Alto. WoodWing Assets fits publishers on WoodWing Studio and Adobe InDesign, and its group holds an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate.

Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.

Verdict

DAMSelection assessment: Fotoware leads on provenance metadata and AI extensions, and WoodWing Assets leads on editorial workflow and documented security certification. Both vendors quote on request, and neither shows Fit Map evidence for a PIM connector. See the Fotoware profile, the WoodWing Assets profile and the vendor directory.

Choose Fotoware when:

  • Your newsroom, archive or communications team must preserve Content Credentials on ingest and filter AI-generated or unverified images out of search.
  • Your metadata model needs adaptive schemas per asset category, which Fotoware Alto documents.
  • Your AI plan includes face and logo recognition, metadata translation and background removal through documented Alto extensions.
  • Your team edits images in a desktop tool, since Fotostation connects to Veloz as an add-on.

Choose WoodWing Assets when:

  • Your editorial workflow runs on WoodWing Studio and Adobe InDesign, which WoodWing Assets integrates natively.
  • Your security review requires an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate and annual external penetration tests.
  • Your brands, regions or partners each need their own branded portal.
  • Your team wants a free 14-day trial before a quote.

Where Fotoware and WoodWing Assets differ

Fotoware and WoodWing Assets differ in product line-up, editorial integration and the depth of their documented AI. The template's facts table covers ownership, deployment and certifications, so this table adds the rest.

Product content and PIM integration

Fotoware and WoodWing Assets both lack Fit Map evidence for any PIM connector, so PIM integration means an API project for either vendor. The PIM and DAM Fit Map shows no cell for either vendor in Akeneo, inriver, Salsify, Stibo STEP or Syndigo.

  • Fotoware lists no packaged PIM connector. Fotoware states that the Alto REST API can map data structures from PIM systems.
  • The Fotoware Alto FAQ states that integration setup and maintenance usually requires development resources.
  • WoodWing documents WoodWing Connect with APIs, webhooks and a Workato iPaaS. WoodWing lists no packaged PIM connector, and pre-built Workato integrations are paid add-ons for WoodWing Cloud customers.

DAMSelection assessment: DAM and PIM form one product content supply chain, so a product-led buyer should budget the integration build before the licence. Ask each vendor for a reference customer on your PIM and read the integration testing guide.

Hosting and security differences

WoodWing Assets documents an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate at group level, and Fotoware's security page names no information security certification. Both vendors offer a managed cloud and an option on the customer's own infrastructure.

  • Fotoware runs Veloz and Alto on Microsoft Azure, with on-premises and hybrid options.
  • Fotoware stores customer data in the Azure region aligned with the customer's selected deployment location. Fotoware Veloz runs in US East, EU West, Germany and Australia East, and Fotoware names no Alto regions.
  • Fotoware keeps its on-premises edition for industries with specific security requirements, such as law enforcement and healthcare.
  • Fotoware lists ISO 9001 for quality management and Eco-Lighthouse.
  • WoodWing Assets runs in WoodWing Cloud with managed hosting and maintenance, or on the customer's own infrastructure. WoodWing Cloud regions are Frankfurt, Northern Virginia and Sydney, one per customer.
  • WoodWing Group holds NEN-EN-ISO/IEC 27001:2023 certification and runs annual external penetration tests on all software provided to customers.

DAMSelection assessment: ask both vendors to confirm hosting regions and backup sites in writing, because the facts files record Fotoware Veloz and WoodWing Cloud regions without backup sites. Ask Fotoware for any information security certificate held for Veloz or Alto. Use the security review guide and the data residency entry.

Pricing model differences

Fotoware and WoodWing Assets both quote on request and publish no prices. The cost drivers they name differ.

Pricing elementFotowareWoodWing Assets
Stated driversWorkflows, users, integrations and scaleUsers, storage volume, customisation and integration
Separately billed itemsAuto-tagging; Fotostation as an add-on to Veloz; Flow add-onNot recorded in DAMSelection facts
Quote processForm request, response within one business dayQuote on request; free 14-day trial

DAMSelection assessment: storage, egress and AI credit consumption drive five-year DAM cost more than licence fees. Fotoware bills auto-tagging as a feature, so ask for the unit and volume behind that line. WoodWing names storage volume as a driver, so ask for the price per extra terabyte. Model both in the TCO calculator.

AI capabilities documented for each

Fotoware documents more shipped AI than WoodWing Assets, and WoodWing lists two AI features without an availability status.

What to test to separate them in a scripted demo

A Fotoware and WoodWing Assets demo should test editorial flow, provenance and integration effort on your own files. Use the DAM demo script and the media and publishing shortlist.

  1. Ingest 50 images that carry Content Credentials and show which credentials survive ingest, edit and export.
  2. Place 20 images from the DAM in an InDesign layout, replace one image and show the update in the layout.
  3. Auto-tag 200 of your images and show the review step, the tag accuracy and the billing unit.
  4. Build a branded portal for one partner and show what a partner user can see and download.
  5. Show the hosting region, backup site and AI processing location in the admin console or contract.
  6. Map 10 product attributes from your PIM into the DAM metadata schema and estimate the development days.

Demo requests that separate them

  1. Show where primary data, backups and AI processing run, and name each sub-processor.
  2. Configure our schema in Dutch, German and English with language-specific vocabularies.

Migration between them

Migration effort depends on export completeness, metadata mapping and integrations to rebuild. Test a 500-asset export from the incumbent during the proof of concept.

Frequently asked

Is Fotoware Veloz the same as Fotoware DAM?

Fotoware Veloz is the 2025 name for the product previously sold as Fotoware DAM. Fotoware renamed the Picturepark Content Platform to Fotoware Alto at the same time. Fotoware acquired Picturepark, a Swiss DAM vendor, in May 2022.

Is WoodWing Assets the same as Elvis?

WoodWing Assets is the 2020 name for Elvis DAM, which WoodWing acquired with Dutchsoftware in 2012. WoodWing also launched Swivle SaaS DAM in 2017, now Assets 10. Older contracts and documentation may use any of the three names.

Can Fotoware and WoodWing Assets run on-premises?
