Short answer
Pimcore is an open core platform from Pimcore GmbH in Salzburg that combines PIM, MDM, DAM and DXP on one data layer. Pimcore DAM is part of the core in every edition, so product teams manage images and product data in one system. The Community edition is free for organisations under EUR 5 million annual revenue; larger organisations need a paid subscription.
Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.
What Pimcore is
Pimcore is a product experience management platform that stores data once and delivers it to websites, commerce systems, print and headless consumers through REST and GraphQL. Pimcore GmbH, based in Salzburg, Austria, licenses the platform. The company was founded in 2013 and closed a USD 12 million Series B led by Nordwind Growth in September 2022.
Pimcore organises all content into three core element types that link to each other:
- Data objects for products, categories, customers and other structured records (PIM and MDM)
- Assets for any file type, with previews, metadata, versioning and generated output formats (DAM)
- Documents for pages, emails and print output (DXP and CMS)
DAM is therefore no separate product or module. Every edition ships the asset element, and Enterprise adds modules around it, such as the Portal Engine for external asset portals and Asset Metadata Class Definitions for class-based asset metadata.
Pimcore ships numbered platform versions. Platform Version 2026.1 made Pimcore Studio, a React interface, the only administration interface. The latest release is 2026.3 of September 2026.
Where Pimcore fits
Pimcore sits in the DAMSelection segment product content, packaging and commerce, because its DAM shares a data layer with its own PIM. DAMSelection assessment: Pimcore fits a buyer that selects PIM and DAM together and has developers or an implementation partner for a PHP and Symfony platform.
Pimcore suits two buyer profiles in particular:
- Manufacturers and retailers that want product images linked to SKUs in the same system that holds product attributes
- Organisations that need headless delivery of product content and assets to several channels
Another segment fits better in these cases:
| Buyer condition | Pimcore fits | Look at another segment |
|---|---|---|
| One data model for PIM and DAM | Yes, shared data layer | |
| Developers or partner available | Yes | |
| Marketing team wants a ready SaaS brand portal | Brand and marketing DAM | |
| Licence-free use above EUR 5 million revenue | Open source | |
| Global multi-brand content operations | Enterprise content platforms |
Read the combined PIM and DAM selection guide before treating one platform as two selections. The vendor directory lists every segment.
How Pimcore covers the core DAM jobs
Pimcore documents ingest, renditions and delivery in most depth, and adds workflow, portals and AI through Enterprise modules.
Ingest and renditions
Pimcore stores any file type and previews images through ImageMagick, video through FFmpeg and Office documents through LibreOffice. A thumbnail engine generates each rendition on the fly from one source file. AVIF, WebP, TIFF, PNG and eight more output formats are allowed by default. Video transcoding needs FFmpeg on the server, which the official Docker images include.
Metadata and search
Pimcore reads embedded EXIF, IPTC and XMP metadata as read-only values and cannot write them back to the file. Custom metadata fields are editable and localisable. Search runs on OpenSearch or Elasticsearch through the Generic Data Index.
Workflow and rights
Pimcore includes a workflow engine, and the Enterprise Workflow Designer configures it visually. Enterprise Copilot automations can filter assets on a metadata condition, for example images with expired usage rights, and notify a user group.
Distribution and sharing
All assets are publicly accessible by URL by default, and restricting access needs web server rules or permission checks. Datahub serves assets and data over GraphQL and REST, WebDAV exposes the asset tree, and a Fastly integration invalidates CDN caches per asset. The Enterprise Portal Engine provides external asset portals.
Product content and PIM integration
Pimcore integrates DAM and PIM natively, because assets and product data objects live in one platform and one database. An image updated once changes on the website, the product record and the export feed.
DAMSelection assessment: the integration question shifts to an external PIM. A buyer that keeps another PIM must connect it to Pimcore assets through Datahub, and should check the PIM and DAM Fit Map. Read DAM vs PIM for the split of responsibilities.
Hosting, security and contract checks
Pimcore runs self-hosted from public source code and Docker images, or as Enterprise PaaS with managed cloud infrastructure. Files are stored through Flysystem on local disk, S3 or other adapters, so a self-hosting buyer chooses the storage location.
Since Platform Version 2025.1, all modules use the Pimcore Open Core License, which requires a paid licence above EUR 5 million annual revenue.
Confirm these points in contract:
- The licence tier, given the EUR 5 million revenue threshold, which the pricing page omits
- Named hosting regions and data residency for Enterprise PaaS, which runs on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure without a published region list
- The audit report behind the SOC 2, PCI DSS and HIPAA compliance listed on the PaaS page, which publishes no certificate
- Which modules your scope needs, as Portal Engine, OpenID Connect single sign-on and Copilot are Enterprise only
- The upgrade path across numbered platform versions
The contract clauses guide lists the clauses to negotiate.
What to test in a scripted demo
Pimcore claims should be tested on your own data with the steps in the demo script guide.
- Link 50 product images to SKUs from your PIM export and generate three marketplace renditions each.
- Configure your asset metadata schema in two languages and show which fields need Enterprise.
- Show what happens to embedded IPTC data when an editor changes a caption.
- Restrict a confidential asset folder and prove an anonymous URL request fails.
- Build an external asset portal in the Portal Engine for one agency.
- Run a Copilot automation that flags images with expired usage rights.
- Deliver approved renditions to a headless front end through Datahub GraphQL.
Pricing questions to ask
Pimcore publishes its edition rules in the licence and documentation, and lists on-premises edition prices on its pricing page with no user, asset or product limits.
| Edition | Licence cost | Included around DAM |
|---|---|---|
| Community | Free under EUR 5 million revenue | Assets, Studio, Datahub, Data Importer |
| Professional | USD 9,900 per year, on-premises | Community scope; confirm extras, as the editions page conflicts |
| Enterprise | USD 29,900 per year, on-premises, on quote | All modules, including Portal Engine and Copilot |
| Enterprise PaaS | Custom, priced per use case | Enterprise plus managed hosting |
Worked example: an organisation with EUR 4 million revenue, outside any larger group, can run Community in production today. Revenue growth past EUR 5 million triggers a paid licence, so agree the switch date in the contract.
Ask these questions:
- Whether the USD 29,900 Enterprise list price covers your scope, and in which currency Pimcore invoices
- Which AI model or inference costs sit outside the subscription
- What does the implementation partner charge per year for upgrades
Model the result in the TCO calculator.

Frequently asked
Is Pimcore DAM free?
Pimcore DAM is free in the Community edition for organisations under EUR 5 million annual revenue. Organisations above that threshold need a Professional subscription at USD 9,900 per year, Enterprise at USD 29,900 per year or a custom Enterprise PaaS subscription. Since Platform Version 2025.1 all modules use the Pimcore Open Core License.
Is Pimcore still open source?
Pimcore left GPLv3 with Platform Version 2025.1 and now licenses all modules under the Pimcore Open Core License. The licence calls the public code Open Core Software, with source available on GitHub and not licensed as open source. Production use is free only under the revenue threshold.
Is the Pimcore DAM a separate module?
Pimcore DAM is part of the core framework in every edition, as assets are one of three core element types. Enterprise adds modules around it: the Portal Engine for external portals, Asset Metadata Class Definitions, Direct Edit and Copilot AI automations.
Does Pimcore DAM have AI features?
Pimcore offers AI through Copilot in the Enterprise edition, including image classification with fine-tuned Hugging Face models and image upscaling. Platform Version 2026.3 added experimental embeddings for semantic image search and duplicate detection, off by default and using an inference service the customer supplies.
Can Pimcore be hosted in the cloud?
Pimcore runs on infrastructure the customer chooses, using Docker images and storage adapters for local disk or S3. Pimcore also sells Enterprise PaaS, which adds managed hosting, automated deployments and infrastructure operations to the Enterprise edition. The PaaS page names AWS, Google Cloud and Azure with multi-region availability but no region list, so confirm regions in contract.
