DAM integrations by platform

Short answer

DAM integrations by platform are rated by DAMSelection for 14 platforms: six PIM systems, two creative tools, and six commerce, CMS and workplace platforms. Each DAM and platform pairing gets a depth level from 4, a native connector maintained by the DAM or platform vendor, to 1, a custom build only. A level counts only when a public source documents it.

The four integration depth levels

DAMSelection rates every DAM integration on four depth levels, set by who builds and maintains the connection.

LevelNameDefinitionEffect for the buyer
4Native connectorBuilt and maintained by the DAM vendor or the platform vendorRelease cycles stay aligned, and support runs through one contract
3Partner or marketplace connectorBuilt by a third party and listed in a marketplace or partner catalogueWorks out of the box, with a second party to contract and support
2Documented API patternA published guide or API pattern without a packaged connectorBuyer or integrator builds and runs the connection
1Custom build onlyNo connector or guide, with explicit evidence that a custom build is neededHighest build effort and ongoing maintenance

A pairing without public evidence stays empty and shows as not verified. DAMSelection never infers a level from marketing claims. The PIM and DAM Fit Map shows levels for every PIM and DAM pairing with its source.

Depth level describes ownership of the connection. Function coverage differs within each level, so the buyer still tests what a connector does.

Platforms DAMSelection covers

DAMSelection covers 14 integration platforms in five categories, as part of the DAM fit framework.

CategoryPlatformsWhat the integration must do
PIMAkeneo, Salsify, Stibo STEP, Syndigo, inRiver, Bluestone PIMLink assets to products, sync metadata and renditions, respect approval status
Creative toolsAdobe Creative Cloud, FigmaPlace approved assets in design files, save work back with metadata, flag new versions
CommerceShopify, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, SAP Commerce CloudPublish renditions to product pages and keep them current
CMSOptimizely, ContentfulLet editors pick assets and serve them from the DAM or its CDN
WorkplaceMicrosoft 365Let office users find and insert approved assets in documents and presentations

PIM pages carry the depth table from the Fit Map. Creative tool pages, such as Adobe Creative Cloud and Figma, explain the extension points each platform offers. The Akeneo page shows the PIM format.

How to test a DAM integration

A DAM integration test runs one real task end to end, on the buyer's assets, in front of the person who will use it.

  1. Pick the task that carries the most volume, such as publishing product images to the PIM.
  2. Write the starting data, the steps and the pass criteria into the scripted demo.
  3. Ask the vendor to name the connector, its builder and its depth level before the demo.
  4. Run the task live on the buyer's sample assets, including one version update and one expired asset.
  5. Check what reaches the target system: file, rendition, metadata fields and status.
  6. Ask for rate limits, sync frequency and error handling in writing.
  7. Repeat the task with production-like volumes in the proof of concept.

DAMSelection rule of thumb: the proof of concept includes one live integration and 2,000 to 10,000 assets. The integration testing guide covers the tests that follow after signature.

Which depth level to require

The required depth level depends on the volume and business weight of each integration. DAMSelection assessment: require level 3 or 4 for the one or two integrations that carry daily volume.

  • PIM and commerce flows that publish product images every day: level 3 or 4, because a broken sync stops product launches.
  • Creative tool panels used by a design team: level 3 or 4, because designers bypass a panel that lags the host application.
  • CMS and workplace links used occasionally: level 2 is acceptable when the organisation has engineers to run it.
  • Level 1 integrations: plan budget for build and maintenance in the five-year cost model.

DAMSelection assessment: DAM and PIM form one product content supply chain, so the PIM integration deserves the strictest test. The DAM integrations guide explains which connections decide value.

Integration depth and five-year cost

Integration depth changes five-year DAM cost through build effort, connector fees and maintenance. A level 4 connector may carry a licence fee. A level 3 connector may add a partner subscription. A level 2 or level 1 integration adds engineering time each year. The DAMSelection TCO Calculator includes integrations as a separate cost line.

Frequently asked

What are the most important DAM integrations?

The most important DAM integrations are the PIM, the creative tools designers use daily, and the web or commerce platform that publishes assets. The right order depends on where asset volume flows. Product-heavy businesses start with the PIM, and brand-heavy teams start with creative tools.

What is the difference between a native and a partner DAM connector?

A native DAM connector is built and maintained by the DAM vendor or the platform vendor, level 4 on the DAMSelection scale. A partner connector is built by a third party and listed in a marketplace, level 3. Partner connectors add a second party to contract and support.

How does DAMSelection verify integration depth?

DAMSelection verifies integration depth with a public source for each pairing, such as a marketplace listing, vendor documentation or a published API guide. Each level carries its source URL and verification date. Pairings without evidence stay empty.

Can a DAM integrate with any platform through its API?

A DAM with a public API can connect to most platforms through a custom build, which DAMSelection rates as level 1 or level 2. Custom builds need engineers to build, monitor and update them when either system releases a new version.
