Short answer
Acquia DAM and Bynder are both brand and marketing DAM platforms hosted on Amazon Web Services. Acquia DAM fits teams that want published plan limits and AI search included in every tier, especially on Drupal. Bynder fits teams that need an EU-only Frankfurt hosting mode, SOC 2 Type II plus three ISO certifications, and a Leader placement in the Forrester Wave DAM Q1 2026.
Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.
Verdict
DAMSelection assessment: Acquia DAM leads on cost transparency and included AI, and Bynder leads on certifications, hosting control and Stibo STEP depth. Compare other pairings in the vendor directory, such as Aprimo vs Bynder, or read the Acquia DAM alternatives.
Choose Acquia DAM when:
- Your budget process needs user, storage and API limits per tier before the first quote. Acquia DAM publishes them for Workgroup, Mid-Market and Enterprise.
- You want AI Search, AI Tagging and the AI knowledge base without a separate contract line.
- Your web estate runs on Drupal, where the Acquia DAM connector is included on every plan.
- Your product content sits in Acquia's own Entries add-on, or in Salsify through the partner integration from Stacks.
Choose Bynder when:
- Your security review asks for SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27018:2019 and ISO 22301:2019 evidence.
- Your data protection officer requires a hosting mode that keeps customer data inside the European Economic Area.
- Your PIM is Stibo STEP, where Stibo Systems builds and lists the Bynder connector itself.
- Your steering group wants a vendor named a Leader in the Forrester Wave for DAM systems, Q1 2026.
Where Acquia DAM and Bynder differ
Acquia DAM and Bynder differ most in how they package AI, how much of the commercial model they publish and who builds their connectors. The template's facts table covers ownership, hosting and certifications, so this table adds the documented differences around them.
| Topic | Acquia DAM | Bynder |
|---|---|---|
| Published plan limits | Three tiers with user, storage and API call limits published | No limits or prices published; a custom package built from modules |
| AI search packaging | AI Search, AI Tagging and AI knowledge base included in every tier | AI search features require a contract upgrade |
| Natural language search | Designed for English, with simple searches in other languages | Fully optimised for English only |
| AI tool connectivity | MCP Server connecting Microsoft Copilot and other AI tools, tagged NEW | AI Agent Platform offered through an Early Access Program |
| CMS connector | Drupal connector included at no extra cost on every plan | Integrations page names Sitecore, Contentful, Drupal, WordPress and Adobe Experience Manager |
| Adobe Creative Cloud connector | Built by partner CI HUB | Built by LinkrUI and labelled Bynder supported |
| Platform lineage | Widen platform, acquisition announced by Acquia in September 2021; DAM Classic support ended December 2022 | Founded 2013; agreed to acquire Webdam from Shutterstock in 2018 |
Product content and PIM integration
Acquia DAM and Bynder both reach Akeneo and Salsify through partner-built connectors at Fit Map level 3, and Bynder adds a level 4 connector for Stibo STEP. Fit Map level 4 means the DAM or the PIM vendor builds and maintains the connector. Level 3 means a third party builds it.
| PIM | Acquia DAM | Bynder |
|---|---|---|
| Akeneo | Level 3: connector built by StrikeTru, listed on the Akeneo App Store | Level 3: partner connectors from Induxx and Dataggo, plus a Gournay Consulting app |
| Salsify | Level 3: integration developed by partner Stacks | Level 3: four partner apps from Gournay Consulting, Lettuce Commerce, The 543 Group and Sitation |
| Stibo STEP | No Fit Map evidence | Level 4: connector developed by Stibo Systems |
| inriver | No Fit Map evidence | Level 3: partner connectors from Ntara, Ctac, XSARUS and Lettuce Commerce |
Acquia states that partners own and support partner integrations, and the StrikeTru Akeneo connector is priced on quote. Acquia also sells its own Entries add-on for product content. Every PIM connector on the Bynder Marketplace comes from a partner.
DAMSelection assessment: name the connector maintainer in the contract for either vendor, because a partner-built connector moves support outside your DAM agreement. Check current depth in the PIM and DAM Fit Map and read the Akeneo integration guide.
Hosting and security differences
Bynder documents three hosting modes and four certifications, and Acquia DAM documents EU residency as an opt-in on a US default. Both run on Amazon Web Services.
- Acquia DAM hosts in AWS US-East and US-West by default. European customers may opt for data storage, processing and backups in AWS EU West and EU Central.
- Acquia DAM states ISO 27001 certification and GDPR and CCPA compliance.
- Bynder offers EU-only hosting in Frankfurt with no customer data outside the EEA, a US-only mode and a Global mode.
- In the Bynder Global mode, assets stay in the upload region while metadata replicates to all regions.
- Bynder holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27018:2019 and ISO 22301:2019, with summary reports available under NDA.
DAMSelection assessment: the opt-in matters at contract stage. Write the chosen region into the Acquia DAM order form. For Bynder, confirm whether the EU-only mode also covers AI search processing. The data residency entry defines the terms, and the security review guide lists the evidence to request.
Pricing model differences
Acquia DAM publishes its plan limits and Bynder publishes none, and neither vendor publishes prices. Both quote annual subscriptions.
| Plan element | Acquia DAM | Bynder |
|---|---|---|
| Entry limits | Workgroup: 50 users, 1 TB, 500k API calls a month | Not published |
| Mid tier | Mid-Market: 500 users, 5 TB, 1M API calls a month | Not published |
| Top tier | Enterprise: unlimited users, 10 TB | Not published |
| Quoted separately | Extra users and storage, Entries, Workflow, Templates, Portals+, Video Creator, Syndicate, implementation | Modules such as Bynder AI, Asset Workflow, Content Workflow, Studio and Analytics |
| Stated cost drivers | Users, storage and API calls per tier | Users, storage and usage across the martech stack |
Worked example: a library of 3 TB that grows by 0.5 TB a year reaches 5.5 TB after five years. On Acquia DAM, that growth crosses the Mid-Market storage limit of 5 TB in year five. On Bynder, the same growth needs a storage clause in the quote.
DAMSelection assessment: storage, egress and AI credit consumption drive five-year DAM cost more than licence fees. The Bynder pricing page does not mention AI credits, so ask for AI usage terms in writing. Model both quotes in the TCO calculator.
AI capabilities documented for each
Acquia DAM documents more shipped AI in its base tiers, and Bynder documents more agent work in early access. Both describe natural language search as optimised for English.

What to test to separate them in a scripted demo
Acquia DAM and Bynder separate on non-English search, PIM sync and hosting proof, so script those scenarios on your own assets. Use the DAM demo script as the frame.
- Run 10 searches in Dutch, German or French on 500 of your assets and compare the results with the same searches in English.
- Link 50 images to SKUs in your PIM through the partner connector, change one image and time the update.
- Show which partner supports the connector, and the support terms for a failed sync.
- Show the hosting region for files, metadata, backups and AI processing in the admin console.
- Generate metadata for 100 images and show the review and correction steps before publication.
- Price a library of 3 TB growing to 5.5 TB over five years, with AI features at expected usage.

Frequently asked
Is Acquia DAM the same as Widen?
Acquia DAM runs on the Widen platform. Acquia announced the acquisition of Widen in September 2021, and support for the earlier Acquia DAM Classic product ended on 31 December 2022. Proposals and documentation may use both names, so check that contracts name the current product.
Does Bynder offer EU-only hosting?
Bynder offers an EU-only hosting mode in Frankfurt that keeps customer data inside the European Economic Area. Bynder also offers US-only and Global modes. Acquia DAM offers EU storage, processing and backups in AWS EU West and EU Central for European customers who opt in.
Which has the better Akeneo connector, Acquia DAM or Bynder?
Acquia DAM and Bynder both sit at Fit Map level 3 for Akeneo. StrikeTru builds the Acquia DAM connector, while Induxx and Dataggo build Bynder connectors. Neither DAM vendor builds its own Akeneo connector, so test sync direction and support terms in a scripted demo.
Are AI features extra in Acquia DAM and Bynder?
Acquia DAM includes AI Search, AI Tagging and an AI knowledge base in every pricing tier. Bynder requires a contract upgrade for its AI search features, and its AI Agents sit in an Early Access Program. Ask both vendors for AI usage limits in writing.
