Comparison

Bynder vs Salsify: which DAM fits which team

Short answer

Bynder and Salsify do different jobs: Bynder is a dedicated brand and marketing DAM, and Salsify is a PIM and PXM platform that stores digital assets next to product records. Salsify alone fits product teams whose assets stay within the Core Edition cap of 500 GB storage. Bynder fits teams that need brand asset workflows and EU-only hosting, often connected to Salsify.

Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.

Verdict

DAMSelection assessment: Bynder and Salsify compete only for product imagery, and many buyers run both with a connector between them. The choice depends on whether your assets serve product pages alone or the whole brand. See the Bynder profile, the Salsify profile, the retail and ecommerce shortlist and the full vendor directory.

Choose Salsify's asset module when:

  • Your assets are mainly product images and documents tied to SKUs, and they fit the Core Edition caps of 500 GB storage and 500 GB monthly CDN bandwidth.
  • Your team wants one system of record for product records and their assets, with one set of user rights.
  • Your security review accepts product and asset data hosted on Amazon Web Services in the USA.

Choose Bynder when:

  • Your assets serve campaigns, brand teams, agencies and channels beyond product detail pages.
  • Your data protection officer requires an EU-only hosting mode that keeps customer data inside the European Economic Area.
  • Your designers need a creative tool connector: Bynder lists an Adobe CC Connector and a Figma app, and DAMSelection found none for Salsify.
  • Your PIM may change, since Bynder holds Fit Map connectors for Akeneo, inriver, Salsify, Stibo STEP and Syndigo.

What each platform is

Salsify is a PIM and PXM platform that manages product records and their digital assets in one system, and Bynder is a DAM that manages brand and marketing assets across channels. The DAM vs PIM guide explains the split, and the PIM glossary entry defines the term.

Salsify's Core Edition includes import, export, storage and display of product records and digital assets, plus a third-party CDN that processes assets for delivery. Salsify lists Cloudinary and ImageKit as sub-processors for image and video management.

Bynder sells a package built from modules: DAM, Bynder AI, Asset Workflow, Content Workflow, Studio and Analytics.

Where Bynder and Salsify differ

Bynder and Salsify differ in system role, published asset entitlements and creative tool reach. The template's facts table covers hosting, ownership and certifications, so this table adds the rest.

Product content and PIM integration

Bynder connects to Salsify at Fit Map level 3, through four partner-supported apps on the Bynder Marketplace. Gournay Consulting, Lettuce Commerce, The 543 Group and Sitation build them.

  • The Gournay Consulting and The 543 Group apps document bidirectional metadata sync.
  • The Lettuce Commerce app syncs assets and metadata and writes product fields back to Bynder.
  • brix Solutions AG sells a Salsify Connector Service that moves product assets from Bynder into one or more Salsify instances by naming convention and collection.

Bynder also holds Fit Map evidence for other PIMs: level 3 for Akeneo, inriver and Syndigo, and level 4 for Stibo STEP, where Stibo Systems builds the connector. A team that may replace Salsify later keeps its DAM connector options open with Bynder.

DAMSelection assessment: DAM and PIM form one product content supply chain, so select them with one shared data model. Agree which system owns each asset field before you compare connectors. Check depth in the PIM and DAM Fit Map and read the Salsify integration guide.

Hosting and security differences

Bynder documents an EU-only hosting mode, and Salsify documents US hosting for product and asset data. DAMSelection assessment: this difference often decides the pairing for European buyers.

  • Salsify lists Amazon Web Services in the USA as the hosting sub-processor for PXM, including digital assets.
  • Salsify hosts Supplier Onboarding in the EU on Microsoft Azure, OVH and Scaleway.
  • Salsify states SOC 2 Type II for ProductXM and SupplierXM. The ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certificate linked from its security page expired on 8 November 2025, and no renewed certificate is published.
  • Bynder offers EU-only hosting in Frankfurt, a US-only mode and a Global mode.
  • Bynder holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27018:2019 and ISO 22301:2019.

DAMSelection assessment: a European team that keeps master assets in Bynder EU-only still sends product images to Salsify's US hosting through the connector. Map that flow in your data residency review, and ask Salsify for its current ISO certificate.

Pricing model differences

Salsify publishes capped asset entitlements without prices, and Bynder publishes neither caps nor prices. Both price storage, so asset growth drives both quotes.

  • Salsify sells edition-based subscriptions. The Core Edition caps asset storage at 500 GB and CDN bandwidth at 500 GB a month per production instance, measured as a three-month average.
  • Salsify offers Enterprise and Enterprise Plus tiers for additional instances, without published prices.
  • Bynder builds a custom package per customer, priced on users, storage and usage across the martech stack.

Worked example: 120,000 product images at an average of 4 MB need 480 GB, close to the Salsify Core cap of 500 GB. Adding video or high-resolution campaign files to the same library passes the cap.

DAMSelection assessment: storage, egress and AI credit consumption drive five-year DAM cost more than licence fees. Price the Bynder licence, the Salsify asset entitlement and the connector together in the TCO calculator.

AI capabilities documented for each

Bynder documents AI for finding and governing assets, and Salsify documents AI for extracting and enriching product content. The documented sets overlap little.

What to test to separate them in a scripted demo

A Bynder and Salsify demo should test the connector and the asset caps on your own product data. Use the DAM demo script and run these scenarios.

  1. Load 1,000 of your product images into Salsify and show storage and bandwidth use against the Core Edition caps.
  2. Upload a new packshot in Bynder and show it on the right Salsify product, with the elapsed time.
  3. Change a product attribute in Salsify and show which fields write back to Bynder.
  4. Expire an image in Bynder and show its removal from Salsify and from the channel feed.
  5. Show where each system hosts the asset, its renditions and its AI processing.
  6. Name the partner that supports the connector, and the response time for a failed sync.

Demo requests that separate them

  1. Set up a brand portal for an external agency with our guidelines in under 30 minutes.
  2. Show what a regional marketer sees and can do, logged in with that role.
  3. Link 50 product images to SKUs from our PIM export and generate marketplace renditions.
  4. Version a packaging artwork file through regulatory approval with full audit trail.

Migration between them

Migration effort depends on export completeness, metadata mapping and integrations to rebuild. Test a 500-asset export from the incumbent during the proof of concept.
