Short answer
Canto and MediaValet are both brand and marketing DAM platforms with ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 Type II reports. Canto fits product-led brands that need SKU-linked assets synced to Shopify and Amazon, or hosting on AWS in Canada or Australia. MediaValet fits organisations on Microsoft Azure that want unlimited users and AI search inside video and audio.
Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.
Verdict
DAMSelection assessment: Canto suits teams that run product content and commerce from the DAM, and MediaValet suits teams that share one library with many internal and external users. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round. The vendor directory holds both profiles, and Bynder vs Canto and Brandfolder vs Canto cover adjacent choices.
Choose Canto when:
- Product teams need images linked to SKUs and attributes, with assets and metadata synced to Shopify and Amazon through Canto DAM for Products.
- Your PIM is Stibo STEP, where Stibo Systems builds a Canto connector (Fit Map level 4) and the Fit Map has no MediaValet cell.
- Creative teams work in Lightroom, Premiere Pro and After Effects, all listed among Canto's native Adobe connectors.
- The security review asks for ISO/IEC 27001:2022, the edition Canto states.
Choose MediaValet when:
- Many agencies, regions or partners need access, since MediaValet pricing includes unlimited users and permission groups.
- Your IT estate standardises on Microsoft Azure, which hosts MediaValet exclusively, with geo-redundant storage keeping six copies across two datacentres.
- Video and audio must be searchable by spoken words, on-screen text, people and scenes through Audio Visual Intelligence.
- Data must sit in the UK or Japan: MediaValet cites both among its Azure regions, and Canto lists neither among its five AWS locations.
Where Canto and MediaValet differ
Canto and MediaValet differ most in user licensing, cloud provider, product content scope and ownership. The table adds documented differences to the verified facts table on this page.
| Topic | Canto | MediaValet |
|---|---|---|
| User licensing | Pricing scales with team size and storage | Unlimited users and permission groups |
| Cloud | AWS | Microsoft Azure only |
| Product content module | Canto DAM for Products, launched as Canto PIM in December 2024 | No product content module documented |
| Commerce connectors | Shopify and Amazon | None documented in the DAMSelection facts |
| Brand and review tools | Brand Studio and Approval Hub, added in Canto XI (October 2025) | Beam Brand Center, acquired June 2025; MediaValet Proofing with PageProof (September 2024) |
| Adobe connectors | Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects and Lightroom | Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign through CI HUB, a third party |
| Ownership events | JMI Equity strategic growth investment, March 2021 | Taken private by an STG affiliate in April 2024 and delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange |
MediaValet adds forensic watermarking powered by Steg.AI, and Marq for templating. Canto lists TYPO3, Contentstack, HubSpot and Zapier, and MediaValet lists Contentful, Jira and Salesforce Sales Cloud. DAMSelection assessment: the STG take-private ended MediaValet's public financial reporting, so ask for a product roadmap in writing.
Product content and PIM integration
Canto has the stronger PIM evidence in the PIM and DAM Fit Map, with a level 4 Stibo STEP connector and a level 3 Akeneo app. MediaValet reaches level 3 on Akeneo only.
| PIM | Canto | MediaValet |
|---|---|---|
| Akeneo | Level 3: CA-Connect, built by The P.I.M. Company GmbH, labelled Partner Supported by Canto | Level 3: MediaValet DAM Connector for Akeneo PIM, built by StrikeTru, last updated August 2023 |
| Stibo STEP | Level 4: built by Stibo Systems, exchanging STEP XML in both directions | No Fit Map cell |
| Salsify | No Fit Map cell | No Fit Map cell |
| inriver | No Fit Map cell | No Fit Map cell |
| Syndigo | No Fit Map cell | No Fit Map cell |
Both Akeneo connectors are priced on quote by the partner or listing. Canto DAM for Products also links images to SKUs inside the DAM, and the September 2026 Canto release names a Product Hub MCP. DAMSelection assessment: a buyer with a separate PIM should decide which system owns the SKU-to-image link before the demo. The Akeneo integration page and the Shopify integration page list other candidates.
Hosting and security differences
Canto runs on AWS in five named locations, and MediaValet runs on Microsoft Azure in the region the customer chooses. Both let the customer choose where data lives.
| Control | Canto | MediaValet |
|---|---|---|
| Documented locations | Ireland, Germany, US West, Canada Central, Australia | Azure regions chosen by the customer; MediaValet cites 60+ regions, including US, EU, Germany, UK, Canada and Japan |
| Redundancy | Not documented in the DAMSelection facts | Geo-redundant storage: six copies across two datacentres |
| ISO/IEC 27001 | ISO/IEC 27001:2022 | ISO/IEC 27001, with the security page citing the 2013 edition; first certified June 2024 |
| SOC 2 | Annual SOC 2 Type 2 report under NDA | SOC 2 Type II, recertified June 2024 |
| Other | HIPAA compliance stated | GDPR compliance stated; HIPAA listed as supported |
| Single sign-on | Not documented in the DAMSelection facts | Azure Active Directory, Google SSO and Okta |
MediaValet cites more than 60 Azure regions, so confirm in writing which regions it offers for a new tenant. Confirm the ISO/IEC 27001 edition and expiry date on the current MediaValet certificate. The data residency entry and the security review guide list the evidence to request.
Pricing model differences
Canto and MediaValet both quote on request, and they meter different things. Canto scales by team size and storage, and MediaValet includes unlimited users and scales by storage, features and services.
- Canto: four packages (DAM, DAM PLUS, DAM for Products, DAM PRO) without prices on its pricing page, described as illustrative. AI search and tagging appear in the higher packages, and AI Visual Search and the AI Library Assistant are add-ons. AI credits are not mentioned.
- MediaValet: no prices or named tiers. AI features, extra storage or bandwidth, complex integrations and migration are named as possible extra costs. No AI credits or usage limits are published.
Worked example: a brand with 40 internal users, six agencies of five users each and 30 regional sales users has 100 users. Canto pricing scales with that team size, and MediaValet pricing includes unlimited users. A library of 2 TB growing 20% a year reaches about 4.1 TB in year 5, which both vendors meter.
DAMSelection assessment: storage, egress and AI consumption drive five-year DAM cost more than licence fees. Ask both vendors to price year 5 storage and AI add-ons. Model both quotes in the TCO calculator.
AI capabilities documented for each
MediaValet documents more AI for video and audio, and Canto documents AI for metadata suggestions and bulk updates. Canto sells its AI search and metadata features as add-ons.
| Status | Canto | MediaValet |
|---|---|---|
| Shipped | AI Visual Search with Find Visually Similar (add-on; video not supported as reference); AI Library Assistant for suggested keywords, tags, custom field values and albums (add-on); AI Bulk Update Assistant, Product Hub MCP and AI Portals (summer 2026) | Auto-tagging with object, colour and text recognition; Smart Image Search in natural language; Audio Visual Intelligence for speech, on-screen text, people, topics and scenes; Face Recognition; similar and duplicate image detection |
| Announced | None in the DAMSelection facts | MV Labs preview with AI-powered search and custom dashboards |
Canto AI Visual Search and the AI Library Assistant run only in the New Library interface. MediaValet names no AI providers on its AI page. DAMSelection assessment: ask both vendors which provider processes your assets and in which region. The auto-tagging entry lists what to check.
What to test in a scripted demo
Canto and MediaValet separate on six points that a scripted demo on your own assets can prove.
- Link 20 product images to SKUs in Canto DAM for Products and push them to a Shopify test store with metadata.
- Search 10 of your videos in MediaValet for a spoken phrase and for on-screen text, then trim and download the found scene.
- Run the Canto AI Library Assistant on 100 untagged images and count accepted suggestions against your taxonomy.
- Give an agency partner access in each system and show the licence impact of adding 30 more external users.
- Sync one approved asset to Akeneo through each partner connector, and name the party that fixes a failed sync.
- Open one asset from the DAM in InDesign in each system, and show which connector and licence it needs.
