Short answer
Brandfolder and Canto are both brand and marketing DAM platforms with quote-only pricing. Brandfolder fits teams on Salsify, because Brandfolder builds its own Salsify integration, and teams already working in Smartsheet. Canto fits product-led brands on Stibo STEP or Akeneo, and buyers who must choose their data region from five documented AWS locations, including Canada and Australia.
Facts on this page are verified against vendor documentation and public sources, each linked. Scenario scores publish after the scripted demo round.
Verdict
DAMSelection assessment: the verdict rests on documented Passport facts and Fit Map cells. Scores on the 12 DAMSelection criteria publish after the scripted demo round.
Choose Brandfolder when:
- Salsify is the PIM of record: Brandfolder builds the integration (Fit Map level 4), and Canto has no Salsify cell.
- The organisation runs Smartsheet and wants the Brandfolder panel inside it, available in Smartsheet EU since June 2023.
- Web teams need renditions by URL: Brandfolder Smart CDN links resize, pad and convert images, and stop serving expired or unapproved assets.
- Sales enablement tools matter: the Brandfolder help centre lists Highspot, Seismic and Salesforce.
Choose Canto when:
- The PIM is Stibo STEP (connector built by Stibo Systems, level 4) or Akeneo (partner connector, level 3).
- Product teams need images linked to SKUs and attributes, synced to Shopify and Amazon through Canto DAM for Products.
- Procurement requires a documented customer choice of data region: Canto documents one, and Brandfolder does not.
Where Brandfolder and Canto differ
Brandfolder and Canto differ most in ownership, cloud provider and the scope of their product content features. The table adds documented facts that the side-by-side Passport table does not cover.
| Topic | Brandfolder | Canto |
|---|---|---|
| Founded | 2012 | 1990, per a Canto-authored company bio |
| Ownership events | Smartsheet acquired Brandfolder in September 2020 for USD 155 million; Blackstone and Vista took Smartsheet private in January 2025 | JMI Equity strategic growth investment in March 2021, stake not disclosed |
| Product content module | Salsify integration; no separate module documented | Canto PIM launched December 2024, now marketed as Canto DAM for Products |
| Commerce connectors named | Shopify | Shopify and Amazon, as part of DAM for Products |
| CMS connectors named | Contentful, Sitecore, WordPress | Drupal, WordPress, TYPO3, Contentstack |
| Work management | Brandfolder panel inside Smartsheet | Adobe Workfront, Asana, monday.com, Wrike |
| Office tools | Microsoft Word and PowerPoint | Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel |
Canto XI, launched in October 2025, added Brand Studio, Approval Hub, AI Library Assistant and Media Publisher. Brandfolder sells Brand Intelligence as a separate product next to its Premium and Enterprise plans. The vendor directory holds the sibling pages Brandfolder vs Bynder and Canto vs Frontify.
Product content and PIM integration
Brandfolder and Canto cover different PIM platforms, with no overlap in the Fit Map. Brandfolder reaches Salsify at level 4; Canto reaches Stibo STEP at level 4 and Akeneo at level 3.
| PIM | Brandfolder | Canto |
|---|---|---|
| Salsify | Level 4: integration built by Brandfolder | No Fit Map cell |
| Akeneo | No Fit Map cell | Level 3: CA-Connect, built by The P.I.M. Company GmbH |
| Stibo STEP | No Fit Map cell | Level 4: connector built by Stibo Systems, exchanging STEP XML in both directions |
| inriver | No Fit Map cell | No Fit Map cell |
| Syndigo | No Fit Map cell | No Fit Map cell |
The Brandfolder Salsify integration keeps Brandfolder as the source of truth for attachments and Salsify as the source of truth for product fields. Assets sync to Salsify products, and product fields return to Brandfolder.
Canto DAM for Products links images to SKUs and attributes and syncs assets and metadata to Shopify and Amazon. The Canto Akeneo connector is labelled Partner Supported and priced on quote by The P.I.M. Company. DAMSelection assessment: the PIM in place decides this pair before any demo, so check the PIM and DAM Fit Map first. The Stibo STEP integration page compares every DAM connector for STEP.
Hosting and security differences
Canto documents five AWS locations and a customer choice of region. Brandfolder documents US and European storage on Google Cloud without a documented region choice. Both vendors report SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001.
| Security item | Brandfolder | Canto |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Google Cloud Storage, redundant across three availability zones | AWS in Ireland, Germany, US West, Canada Central and Australia |
| Region selection | Not documented | Customer selects US, EU, Canada or Australia |
| ISO wording | Conformance with ISO/IEC 27001 stated | ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification stated |
| Other controls | SAML 2.0 single sign-on, AES-256 encryption at rest | SOC 2 Type 2 report under NDA, HIPAA compliance stated |
DAMSelection assessment: ask Brandfolder for the certificate and its scope, and for a contract clause that fixes the storage region. Ask Canto where AI features run, because the Canto AI terms name no processing regions. The data residency entry and the security review guide list the questions.
Pricing model differences
Neither Brandfolder nor Canto publishes prices on its pricing page, and both put AI features into higher plans or separate products. A five-year comparison needs two quotes on identical volumes.
- Brandfolder lists Premium and Enterprise plans, both routed to a demo. Video AI is a Premium inclusion, and Brand Intelligence is a separate product without a published price.
- Canto lists four packages without prices and calls them illustrative. Pricing scales with team size and storage, and AI search and tagging appear in the higher packages.
- Neither pricing page mentions AI credits.
DAMSelection assessment: storage, egress and AI consumption drive five-year DAM cost more than licence fees. Give both vendors the same request:
- Asset count and storage at go-live, plus annual growth.
- Internal users and external portal users.
- Monthly delivery volume to web and commerce channels.
- AI features in scope: Brandfolder Video AI and Brand Intelligence, Canto AI Visual Search and AI Library Assistant.
- Product content scope: Canto DAM for Products, or the partner Akeneo connector.
Model both quotes in the TCO calculator.
AI capabilities documented for each
Canto documents more shipped AI features for metadata and bulk work, while Brandfolder documents more video AI. Neither vendor documents announced features in the verified sources.
| Capability area | Brandfolder | Canto |
|---|---|---|
| Tagging and metadata | Auto-tagging with tags generated by Google AI, best on assets up to 20 MB or 75 megapixels | AI Library Assistant suggests keywords, tags, custom field values and albums from similar assets and the taxonomy |
| Visual search | None documented | AI Visual Search with Find Visually Similar; video cannot serve as the reference |
| Video | Video AI: auto-tags, scene count detection, speech-to-text and text extraction (Premium) | None documented |
| Bulk and agent features | None documented | AI Bulk Update Assistant, Product Hub MCP and AI Portals, described in September 2026 as shipped |
DAMSelection assessment: the Canto AI add-ons run only in the New Library interface, so confirm the interface version in the demo tenant. Brandfolder describes Brand Intelligence on a product page, so confirm in the demo which of its features are available. See auto-tagging for how to measure tag quality.
What to test to separate them in a scripted demo
Brandfolder and Canto separate fastest on PIM sync, region proof, delivery behaviour and AI on your own assets. Add these tests to the demo script:
- Link 50 product images to products in your PIM and change one product field. Show where the change lands.
- Show in the admin console where files, metadata, backups and AI processing sit. Ask Brandfolder to show how the region was assigned.
- Expire a licensed image and request its delivery URL on both platforms.
- Run AI-assisted tagging on 100 unseen product shots and count accepted tags per asset.
- Upload a 10-minute product video and show tags, transcription and scene detection.
- Quote the same configuration twice: with and without every AI feature or add-on.

Demo requests that separate them
- Set up a brand portal for an external agency with our guidelines in under 30 minutes.
- Show what a regional marketer sees and can do, logged in with that role.
Migration between them
Migration effort depends on export completeness, metadata mapping and integrations to rebuild. Test a 500-asset export from the incumbent during the proof of concept.
