Short answer
Asset reuse rate is the share of assets used more than once, or in more than one channel, within a period. Asset reuse rate is a core DAM value KPI, because every reuse avoids a new shoot or design request. The measure holds only when the DAM records downloads, shares and channel publications per asset from the first day of use.
How asset reuse rate works in a DAM
Asset reuse rate divides the number of reused assets by a defined base of assets, for one period. The definition must fix three choices before anyone reports a number.
| Choice | Option A | Option B |
|---|---|---|
| What counts as reuse | Used 2 or more times | Used in 2 or more channels |
| Denominator | Assets used at least once | All assets available in the period |
| Usage source | Downloads and shares | Downloads, shares, CDN delivery and PIM links |
The DAM collects usage from download logs, share links, delivery URLs and integrations. Usage through embedded CDN links and PIM feeds often sits outside download logs, so the integration must report it back.
Example of asset reuse rate
Worked example: a team publishes 10,000 product images in one quarter. Of those, 3,800 appear in three or more channels, such as webshop, marketplace and print catalogue.
On a three-channel definition, the reuse rate is 38% for the quarter. The team reports the same definition every quarter, so the trend shows whether the DAM and the content process increase reuse. The figures are illustrative.
Asset reuse rate in a DAM selection
Asset reuse rate belongs at checkpoint 3, Justify, where it supports the business case, and at checkpoint 6, Score, where it sets a measurable target. The business case guide and the DAM ROI guide show how reuse feeds the value model.
Test these four behaviours at checkpoint 5, Test:
- Show a usage report per asset across channels for a sample of buyer assets.
- Show how the DAM counts delivery through CDN URLs and PIM feeds.
- Export usage data through the API for an external dashboard.
- Filter the report by brand, market and period.
DAMSelection assessment: measure a baseline before go-live, even a rough one from shared drives. Without a baseline, the business case cannot show improvement. The DAM KPIs guide pairs reuse with other measures, and the TCO calculator puts the value next to the cost.
Common mistakes with asset reuse rate
Asset reuse rate reports mislead through four common mistakes.
- Counting repeated downloads by the same user as reuse.
- Changing the denominator between periods, which breaks the trend.
- Ignoring usage outside the DAM interface, such as CDN and PIM delivery.
- Reporting reuse alone. Pair it with time to find, metadata completeness and rights exposure.

Frequently asked
How do you calculate asset reuse rate?
Divide the number of assets used more than once, or in more than one channel, by the number of assets in your chosen base, for one period. Fix the reuse rule, the denominator and the usage sources first, and keep them the same in every report.
What is a good asset reuse rate?
DAMSelection knows of no reliable public benchmark for asset reuse rate across industries. Compare the rate with your own baseline before the DAM, and set a target per asset type, because packaging artwork and social content follow different reuse patterns.
